Anybody want to trade places?

Tags: , ,
I'm at the school where I'm going to be teaching this afternoon and have a few minutes and wireless access before class so I though I'd update and let y'all know how my morning went.

My plan was to get up, get books from my office at school, get on the road to Virginia Beach, and get to the Barnes and Noble around opening at 9:00 to get my wristband for my place in line tonight.

Instead, I got up, went up to my office at school, and dropped my keys. No big deal, right? Of course this is Rachael's world and I seem to attract the screwiest kinds of bad luck so dropping my keys became an hour long disaster. When I dropped them, they rolled down a little hill and straight into the drainage hole. I had to call the campus police, who called facilities maintenance. A couple of maintenance guys came, took the manhole cover off the drainage ditch, and managed to fish my keys out using a long pole. Thankfully the keys had settled in the silt and hadn't ran off with the water or else I would be toast.

Thanks to all that, I got to Barnes and Noble closer to 10:00 than the 9:00 opening time. I had to wait in line for over an hour to get wristband number 237. I did manage to eat something while standing in line and it has stayed in my stomach, unlike last night, so that is one bright spot. Hopefully the line will move more quickly tonight and it won't take a couple of hours for me to get my book, even with 236 people in front of me in line. If it takes too long, I won't have time to finish the book before I have to go teach classes. :(

Is anybody else having a disaster of a time trying to get DH or is it just me?

I've got Amazon delivering mine sometime tomorrow...I'd totally fail at queuing up.

I just couldn't wait that long. It drives me batty enough to know that people in other parts of the world will get it hours before I will. Knowing that I could have it and then waiting hours for the postman would just be too much. Patience is a virtue I do not posses ;)

A valid point - I just did that because I had no idea where I'd be, and figured shipping would work best. I wasn't that into Harry Potter a month ago, but the last month has seen me get right back into it - so much so that I read the spoilers. Now I know the first thing I'll do is flip to a page number and see if the leaked book is actually real...

I'm also hoping the Brits confirm the leaked book before I get it. I'm so lame.

gilpin25 and I are potentially flooded if the rain doesn't let up. We're thinking we might have to set out in some kind of boat....

Well, my keys were floating but that's about it for me. Hopefully the boats won't become necessary.

No disaster here...I'm somewhere between 100 and 125. They didn't give exact numbers, I'm just in the 5th group of 25.

I did, however, hear someone say "fanfic" behind me, and I turned and asked a trio of girls what they write. "Harry/Draco." I laughed. Then told them I shipped R/T. They seemed to find this cute and said, "If Remus can't be with Sirius, Remus/Tonks is okay, too." Then a minute later they started talking about how weird Snarry slashers are. I turned and said, "Sorry, from a canon pairing perspective, you're all weird." They laughed and didn't seem to care.

LOL. I would have loved to meet crazy fanficers. I chatted with the lady in line behind me. She was determined that there is no reason for Dumbledore to have died; JKR created her own genre so the argument about hero's journey and Harry needing to be on his own to fit the genre is bogus; even if it is valid as a genre argument, he won't be on his own; all book 6 showed was that Harry cannot do this without Dumbledore and is a baby compared to Dumbledore; etc. It was silly.

I'm picking up my wristband after work so I'll probably be in line until 3am before I get my book! It's been along time since I've pulled an all nighter but it just might be worth going without sleep until tomorrow night.

I actually wasn't planning on doing the midnight thing but I was talking with a friend and we decided "What the heck." We may regret that decision come midnight but we're making it a Harry night. Doing dinner and then seeing OotP movie (numba 3 for me). I even made a tshirt for the occasion. I'll post a picture on my journal later but it says "SAVE LUPIN" in big black letters and "& Tonks" in a pink script angled over the right side of LUPIN.

That shirt sound unbelievably cute! I hope you have a good time.

Disaster doesn't cover it. I reserved my 2 copies, but no one told me about wristbands or anything. So my friend and I arrived tonight at midnight to find a line going all the way around the outside of the Barnes and Noble. So we left, sans books. :(

I also ordered a copy from Amazon to be delivered, so that's my failsafe if tomorrow (erm, today!) is also disastrous. ;)

I'm sorry you didn't get it at midnight.

Don't let anyone spoil the book for you before you read it!
bratanimus at 11:40 am on 21 July 2007 (UTC) (Link)
Thanks! I'll bet you are through reading - or nearly so! :D

I had a VERY NEAR SPOILING DISASTER. (Don't worry, no spoilers here, of course!) Luckily I reacted quickly and looked away. What happened was last night after the B&N travesty I looked on my LJ friends page (which is how I saw your post), and some $@#&%$*& had posted spoilers to one of the communities that I subscribe to (I'm pretty sure the user's name was creepylove; and think it was posted to Wolf & Lady, but I looked away too quickly to be sure). They had written it in HUGE font. >:(

I am simply appalled by how AWFUL people can be. I mean, they do it JUST BECAUSE THEY CAN. (Can you tell Lauren is upset?) Grrrrrrrrrr!!!!!! I've spent all this time avoiding the internet and newspapers, and I nearly let some jerk spoil it for me on the eve of the release! >:( No more looking at my LJ friends page until I'm done with the book.

Anyway, wish me luck about getting it today. I look forward to chatting with you! :)
