Wizard of the Month Challenge

Tags: , ,
I have randomly decided that I want to do a Wizard of the Month challenge. Here is the basic plan thus far:

  1. Everyone will have a few days (a week or two? I don't care.) to write a Wizard of the Month entry like the ones on JKR's website (archive of past WotM) but maybe a little longer. During this time, everyone should feel free to invite anyone else they want to participate.

  2. At the end of this time will be a posting day or two. I'll make an entry for posts on my journal so we can keep them all in one place and easily find everyone's entries. Everyone should of course feel free to also post to her (his?) own journal. For all I care, you can post it only in your journal and just give a link in the comment on my entry.

  3. We can vote on awards or whatever if people want to, but I really just want to see what kind of creative ideas for interesting magical characters the flist can think of and describe in only a paragraph or so.

  4. If we like it, we can do it again sometime and turn it into a more structured challenge (things like this month must be a writer, or a singer, or someone from the 17th century, or someone from Asia, or an infamous criminal, or whatever).

Yeah. So like I said, this idea just popped into my head and I haven’t worked out the details. Suggestions? Comments? A desire to tell me this is a stupid idea and I should go back to my history books? Let me know what you think.

I like it! Maybe we could sneak in some ones for our OCs....

Oh good. Someone else likes my silly idea. Maybe I'm not completely crazy.

Maybe we could sneak in some ones for our OCs....
That would be cool.

I like that idea! It sounds like fun. :)

Now I have a CSS-y question for you. Okay, let’s see if I can explain this properly… You know how in the ‘Expressive Theme’ they give you a little blurb that has a link to all your tags? (Like here - http://i14.tinypic.com/3zutn2v.png) Do you know if there is a way to do this in ‘Flexible Squares’? And if you can, is there a way that you can put it up top, like under the ‘Recent Entries/Profile/etc’ links like your quote generator?

The Flexi Squares base code was recently (within the past couple of weeks) changed so you can do the tag cloud in the sidebar without very much work at all. You just have to go into the regular customization section, go to the bit on the sidebar, and select to show the options for the tags and show them as a cloud rather than a list.

Putting it in the header requires a paid account, which you conveniently have for them moment and some work. Before you had the paid account, did you have a basic or a plus (with ads) account? I know for certain that, if you had a basic, if you don't renew your paid account, any changes you make requiring a paid account will stay even after the paid account expires, you just can't change them any more and if you switch from a basic to a plus you'll lose them.

Do you want me to look into the code for putting it in the header?

Wait. I just had a thought. You don't normally have any sidebar on your flexi square lay out, right? If that's the case and you don't care if the tag cloud is actually contained in the header box versus being in its own box underneath it, there might be a way to get it up top using only CSS and thus easier and completely free account settings. Give me a few minutes...

Yep, I just have the main journal without a sidebar. I don't care if it's in the header at all. Thank you, thank you. :D

1. Currently, if you go to your customization section, on the page where you enter custom CSS, what do the three yes/no drop down boxes on that page say?

2. I'm not completely happy, yet. There's got to be a better way to do some of what is going on but how's this for a start?

1. Use layout's stylesheet(s) – Yes
Use layout's stylesheet(s) when including custom external stylesheet – No
Use external stylesheets - No

2. That looks great, but is there a way not to have the big block of free space by the side of the journal entries? Also, that is freaky how you got my layout so easily. :P

Yeah. I'm not sure what is going on with the white space.

I was hoping yes was the answer to the first question. That makes it easier to get the tags.

I stole your CSS. It's pretty easy to do. :)

With right click, view page source perhaps? :P
Rachael
bratty_jedi at 8:48 pm on 24 January 2007 (UTC) (Link)
That would be one of the ways. I've also got a web developer tool bar that will let me see a bit more and a slightly more organized fashion but right click, view source would have got me all the information I needed for this. I think I got rid of the empty space. There was an auto margin in there to account for the sidebar on the side since the system knew the sidebar was on display but didn't realize I'd moved it to the top. Now I'm just playing with one other thing... I think.

You know you're made of awesome, right? Thanks so much for helping me with this! I am slightly clueless when it comes to most CSS things, I know the basics but not much more, which is unfortunate since my friend and I are starting a webpage for a webcomic we’re working on.

Let me know if you'd like me to make you an animated icon or plain icon to repay you a bit. :)

Would you want anything else in the side (now top) bar? Your default user pic, the calendar, anything?
Jordan
kileaiya at 8:54 pm on 24 January 2007 (UTC) (Link)
The calendar and link list would be nice if you can get it in there. :D

Tell me what you think

If you're happy, I'll try to figure out what all I changed and give you the directions to implement it.

If you're not happy, tell me what else you want.

Count me in. :)

Although wizard of the month? Remus, Remus Remus!

I may have to put a ban on him, or perhaps canon characters in general, just to prevent the entire flist from doing Remus ;-)

Hey! I knew you had a livejournal, I just started this thing and had no idea how to find you! Glad that we can keep in touch!
