Issues, Issues, and More Issues

This is really just not my semester. Every stupid little thing that could possibly go wrong and add stress to my life seemes bound and determined to happen this semester. With the apartment complex trashing a bunch of my stuff, ID theft, my hand held computer breaking down, etc., I'm beginning to live in fear of what will go wrong next. Unfortunately, I think I know my next big problem. It is looming on the horizon and I am just waiting for it.

I'm really afraid my main computer, my laptop, is going to die. Everything seems to be fine in terms of the processor, the OS, and the way it is actually working. The physical computer is having serious issues. It keeps getting very, very hot. That worries me. More problematic, however, is the power cord. It is not really making the connection when I plug it into the back of the computer. If I jiggle it and move it to certain angles, I can usually get it to work. In addition to be temperamental, it is overheating more than the rest of the computer. It gets to the point where I cannot touch the metal prong that sticks into the computer because it is literally burning hot. I have a couple of very slight red burns on my fingers from touching it. A couple of days ago, the cord got really hot and would not come out of the computer. I obviously didn't want to just yank it, but pulling as hard as I felt I could safely do, I could not get it to disconnect. I turned the computer off, everything cooled down, and the cord came out. Last night, the cord again refused to come out. Even after being off all night, it still won't come out this morning. I really have no idea what is wrong or how serious of an issue this will be. But given my luck so far this semester, as soon as I get back from volunteering at the elementary school, I think I will move all my docs, etc. onto a CD. Just to be on the safe side.

Slightly related note: does anyone, by any chance, use Mozilla Thunderbird for emails?
Feeling: anxious

I’ve been hearing about a rash of laptop fires caused by the battery. Sony manufactured batteries for a bunch of laptop brands and they’ve had to recall them, so maybe it’s the battery?

I suppose it could be. But I have a fairly new battery already because the one that came with the laptop died. And that wouldn't explain the cord getting stuck (which it still is). Whatever my problem is, I just hope I don't have a fire!

Whatever it is, I hope you can figure it out. Can you take it to a local computer shop and have them check it over?

My parents are both techies so I'm trying to stick it out to Thanksgiving so they can look at it. I think the school has a tech center that will look at student computers for free so if I get too frustrated with it or worried about it, I might look into that between now and then.
