Halloween - Hogwarts Style

Tags: , , , ,
A couple of friends of mine had a little Halloween get together on Sunday afternoon. We ate holiday inspired foods, we carved pumpkins, one of the hosts played Hedwig's Theme on the piano, and we watched Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban on DVD (No, I'm not the only HP nut in Williamsburg. Maybe just the biggest.). I had lots of fun!

While the others were carving slightly more traditional bats and spooky faces, I attempted to create a homemade pattern and carving of the Hogwarts school crest. I got it a bit thin at some points (ignore the missing leg on the H), but overall I'm quite pleased with myself and have ideas for improving the design to make it more stable for next year. If I get it really good, I'll carve it into a permanent pumpkin. Anywho, assuming I did this right, the pic below links to my gallery for more pics of the pumpkin. I will probably add a couple more pics of the carving process later. My friend needs to email them to me.

Thanks! Like I said, I'm going to try it again next year and see if I can do it without making too many errors. If it comes out really well, I might make a userpic out of it :)

Thanks. :)

I'm probably more proud of it than anyone should be of a pumpkin, but there you go...

Ooo, I love it! Very well done. ;)

I didn't realize you are in VA! I live in Roanoke! Cool. :D

Thanks!

Cool! A bunch of my friends went to Roanoke this weekend for a concert (Old Crow Medicine Show). I'm in the history PhD program at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg. Moving here from Texas seemed like a wise idea since I'm doing colonial American history.

Small world, isn't it? I grew up and went to school in North Carolina. The Husband and I were in the Washington DC area recently, but found the pace a bit too hectic (and the cost of living was ridiculous). We both love the mountains, so he found a job in Roanoke last year, and then so did I. There's not much to do at night, so I'm not 100% certain we'll stay here forever; we both tend to like university towns a lot for size and cultural stuff. But Roanoke is a nice city, and there are lots of good hikes to be had. :D

That's the one thing that drives me batty about Williamsburg: no mountains. I love hiking and there is a good park here for flat terrain through woods and swamp and I go there a lot, but I want some mountain hiking. I've never gotten into actual mountain climbing (too much equipment), but I love bouldering and climbing/scaling anything I can without all the ropes, etc.

There really isn't any night life here, either, but that doesn't really bother me.

I think you should officially be named Pumpkin Carving Champion. That's very impressive!
