50 Q Meme

Hi! Long-time no see as seems to be happening a lot lately. This year has just got off to a very rough start. April hasn't been too bad so far, though, so I'm hoping the worst is over with. Just to say "Howdy!" again, I stole this 50 question meme from qwentoozla.

1. What's your favorite candle scent?
Something fairly light and simple like vanilla. Heavy scents mess with my sinus allergies and make me sneeze.

2. What female celebrity do you wish was your sister?
I don't know... I've never considered a celebrity as a fake sibling. This question seems weird to me.

3. What male celebrity do you wish was your brother?

4. How old do you think you'll be when you get married?
I don't care. I don't really care if I ever get married. Given where I am now in life, late 30s to early 40s or never are probably the most likely answers.

5. Do you know a hoarder?
As in at a potentially dangerous level? No. As in someone with just more junk than they know what to do with and an inability to get rid of things they really don't need any more? Absolutely! That describes most of my family, including me.

6. Can you do a split?
Used to be able to but not for years.

7. How old were you when you learned how to ride a bike?
Not sure. Maybe 7 or so without training wheels. I do know I broke my dad's finger in the process of learning. We were visiting at the house of a cousin who is a few months older than me. She was already without training wheels and they said the way she learned was her dad had ridden his bike holding onto her seat to get her going and then he'd let go and she'd continue on her own. My dad and I tried that on her and her dad's bike, which I maintain was a very bad idea because she was a bit taller than me so the bike would have been awkward even if I wasn't still learning therefore everything that happened next was not my fault. I lost my balance on the one bike, crashed into him on the other bike, and somehow in the process of both of us falling his finger went into the spokes of a wheel and the bone got snapped. Oops.

8. How many oceans have you swum in?
2: Atlantic and Pacific

9. How many countries (other than your homeland) have you been to?
Realistically: one. Germany.
Technically: five more so six. I've crossed the border into Mexico, back when it was easier to just jump back and forth across the border, been at a place on the German border where three nations meets (Belgium and Netherlands as the other two), been to a Spanish-controlled island in the German immigrant /ex-pat section, and crossed from Germany into Austria for a brief time on a road trip.

10. Is anyone in your family in the army?
Nope, but several members of my family are or have been in the Air Force and Navy.

11. What would you name your daughter if you had one?
I like names with lots of nickname potential so the kid can have some say. So something like Elizabeth where she can be Liz, Beth, Libby, Betsy, Elizabeth, etc. as she desires. I don't actually really like Elizabeth, though, and don't have any other specific name in mind, but something along those lines.

12. What would you name your son if you had one?
Same idea as above, except I have a couple of specifics I kind of like. I used to really like William and start by calling him Liam but he could switch to something else if he wanted. Liam has become so trendy over the last few years, though, that I'm not sure.
I also kind of want to name a kid Henry and call him Hal.

13. What's the worst grade you got on a test?
No idea. There were some bad ones, I'm sure.

14. What was your favorite TV show when you were a child?
I don't know. I watched lots of things but nothing that was like "OMG! Must watch!!" My first celebrity crush was on Michael J. Fox on Family Ties when I was 3 or 4 so I guess we could go with that.

15. What did you dress up as on Halloween when you were eight?
I don't remember things year-by-year. At a guess though, that could be the year there was a freak snow and we had to throw together a warmer costume at the last minute and I ended up as a unicorn in a head from my sister's old costume and my dad's kind of fur coat or it could be the year I used an old mermaid dance costume (the dance was to Under the Sea and Little Mermaid came out the year I was 7 so the costume still fitting but having been retired as a dance costume by Halloween when I was 8 is possible).

16. Have you read any of the Harry Potter, Hunger Games or Twilight series?
All of Harry Potter (multiple times) and Hunger Games (once), none of Twilight.

17. Would you rather have an American accent or a British accent?
People in my current career and location would take me more seriously with almost any British accent, but I like my mix of various American accents.

18. Did your mother go to college?
Community College. She got her Associate's.

19. Are your grandparents still married?
On my dad's side, my grandparents were married until he died three years ago and now she's gone, too. On my mom's side, her parents divorced when she was 6, I think. Her father died the month before I was born so I never knew him. Her mother has been married either five times to four guys or six times to five guys. I know there is a five in there and that she married one guy twice. That said, she has been married to her current husband I think since before I was born and I think of him as my grandpa and was at least in late elementary school before I learned he wasn't my biological grandfather. I think it was one of those little-kid logic things where even after I knew he wasn't my mom's biological dad, it took another couple years before it clicked that that meant he wasn't my biological grandfather.

20. Have you ever taken karate lessons?

21. Do you know who Kermit the frog is?

22. What's the first amusement park you've been to?
Maybe Disney World in Florida. We went when I was 4 or 5.

23. What language, besides your native language, would you like to be fluent in?
I'd like to be fluent in basically any and all other languages. I have no real desire for something specific, beyond maybe improvement in the ones I already know. I'm proficient in French, but I wouldn't say fluent. I'm slow but passably reading proficient in Dutch, but can't speak it at all.

24. Do you spell the color as grey or gray?
Grey by preference.

25. Is your father bald?
Nope. He usually has pretty long hair.

26. Do you know triplets?
No triplets in my life now, but I do have cousins who are sextuplets. Since there are six of them, we could kind of count them as two sets of triplets. They turned 13 earlier this week so feel free to feel sorry for their parents and older sister (17).

27. Do you prefer Titanic or The Notebook?
I have seen Titanic. I have not seen The Notebook. Neither of them are my kind of film.

28. Have you ever had Indian food?
Absolutely. Local Indian restaurant does a fantastic lunch buffet.

29. What's the name of your favorite restaurant?
Local, probably Taco Mexicali. Chain, probably Five Guys.

30. Have you ever been to Olive Garden?

31. Do you belong to any warehouse stores (Costco, BJ's, etc.)?
No, but my parents do.

32. What would your parents have named you if you were the opposite gender?
Randall Leroy.

33. If you have a nickname, what is it?
Brat and Bratty (thus the online handle of bratty_jedi). A few people call me Rae or Rach from Rachael. My mom sometimes calls me Rachie but no one else is allowed to do that.

34. Who's your favorite person in the world?
No idea. I've got lots of friends and family I love to pieces.

35. Would you rather live in a rural area or in the suburbs?
Rural. I'd prefer rural or city with different pluses and minuses on each side over suburbs which is just all the bad and little of the good from each.

36. Can you whistle?
Yeah, but not loudly.

37. Do you sleep with a nightlight?
No! I hate light when I'm trying to sleep. Black out curtains, all visible lights on electronics covered, etc.

38. Do you eat breakfast every morning?
Try to.

39. Do you take any pills or medication daily?
So many. I think my max was 24 pills a day with extras as needed. Now it is only 14 pills a day (9 in the mornings and 5 in the evenings) plus one topical ointment and two nasal sprays in the morning and, again, extras as needed. Right now there are usually extras due to stupid spring and stupid pollen.

40. What medical conditions do you have?
So many. There's one big one and that's Crohn's Disease. In brief if you don't know it, it's an autoimmune disorder of the digestive system so my body, instead of attacking the germs trying to make me sick like it is supposed to do, attacks my intestines and the food I'm supposed to be digesting, causing massive pain, bleeding in my intestines, and the possibility of need to surgically repair or remove parts of my intestines if it gets too bad. Fortunately, my case isn't the most extreme and I can largely manage it with medication and diet so I only have some complications not massive ones.
I've also got absolutely terrible sinus allergies, acid reflux, asthma, migraines, and probably other things I'm forgetting at the moment.

41. How many times have you been to the hospital?
I've never been admitted, but I've been in for things like sprained and/or broken bones a few times.

42. Have you ever seen Finding Nemo?

43. Where do you buy your jeans?
Past couple years, Express during their half-price sale in December.

44. What's the last compliment you got?
I don't know.

45. Do you usually remember your dreams in the morning?

46. What flavor tea do you enjoy?
Basic black more often than not. Every morning includes Irish and English Breakfast. Earl Grey is the work of the devil and is evil, vile stuff, though.

47. How many pairs of shoes do you currently own?
I don't know. I'd have to go count. I'll say 15.

48. What religion will you raise your children to practice?
My children will not be raised in any religion. I'm an atheist if you want a one-word definition of my views, though of course I could say a lot more than that about exactly what I think.
My parents were raised in Protestant Evangelical Christian religions (Methodist and Baptist) and there was kind of a background of that, but they never took my sister and I to church or had us baptized. My sister is now basically the same as my parents and no one is overly pleased about my declared atheism. Oh well.

49. How old were you when you found out that Santa wasn't real?
I don't know. Maybe 8?

50. Why do you still have a journal here, considering everyone else is on Facebook?
I like here more. I like people who are here who aren't on FB. I can say more here. I've just been feeling overwhelmed lately so haven't been around as much.

Sextuplets! I can't imagine!

Yep. It's crazy. They were in the news a reasonable amount when they were born and their local paper checks in with them every so often. Most of the first 20 or so images in a google search for Headrick sextuplets are them at various stages, but a few are other multiples.
