Sherlock 3:2 = The Sign of Three

News here.

Sign of Four is by far the worst of the four Conan Doyle novels and still one of the worst stories when you compare it to the 56 shorts. That means nothing for this show though since it isn't like it is straight-forward adaptations.

In all three series so far, co-creators Moffat and Gatiss have each written one episode and Steven Thompson has written the third. This one is Thompson's. His previous two are easily the worst Sherlock episode (1:2 Blind Banker) and a great one (2:3 Reichenbach Falls) so can't make many conclusions based on that. Of course, since we already know Gatiss wrote 3:1, that means 3:3 will presumably be Moffat's. That plus Cumberbatch's revelation that he and Freeman are both already signed for a fourth series says to me fandom should be prepared for another major cliffhanger ending.

The Sign of Three

I completely agree with you on all of this. And when you said that Moffat was most likely going to write 3:3, I was literally like "oh come on, they got the troll to do ittt!!" XD But I truly love Sherlock and can't wait for season 3, no matter what happens..... Unless John leaves 221B, then I'll be angry. O_O

Re: The Sign of Three

I'd count on John leaving. Moffat has said from the start that he wanted to show that aspect of the canon in this show and everything else indicates this is the series when it will happen.

I think Moffat even twittered some time after S2 that S3 would end on some really mean cliffhanger, and knowing now that he is the one to write the last episode - well, we all can spend the next months preparing. *g*

I'm interested to see what they do with Sign of Four and I hope Thompson is still working his skills from TRF, and TBB was simply an unfortunate slip.^^

When I posted this on facbook, I had a friend comment sarcastically that he couldn't wait to see what they do with the pygmy assassin. I said that I rather thought the Chinese gymnast in Blind Banker was already their take on the pygmy assassin and I was kind of surprised they were taking on Sign of Four more directly (unless the name is something of a misdirection) because they have already played with many elements from it which got me a "Oh! Good point! I hadn't made that connection." kind of response.

I'm not sure if the fact that the most problematic elements of Sign of Four are already off the table should make me more optimistic for this one or the fact that Thompson is returning to the same material he already didn't exactly wow me with the first time should make me less so.
