Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

Tags: ,
BBC will be doing a pretty big (7 hours) miniseries adaptation for Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell with networks in America and Canada on board. I love whoever did this writeup for the NYTimes Blog due to the last paragraph: "No casting was immediately announced for Jonathan Strange, Mr. Norrell or the footnotes, and we’ll assume Matt Smith and Benedict Cumberbatch are otherwise occupied."

Silliness aside, I loved the end of JS&MN but thought it took way too long to get anywhere and never could decide if the fantastic ending was worth the slog to get there or not. I'll almost certainly watch the miniseries as I think it could make for a fantastic filmed experience and might actually have enough material in it to justify seven hours.

EDIT: For anyone interested in my thoughts on the book, I apparently wrote a short review of it when I read it in 2008 which doesn't 100% match how I remembered feeling but my memories were basically on target.

I never made it to the end. I think I managed about a third and then felt so incredibly bored that I stopped. Since then a lot of people have told me that I should have read the whole thing because the end was awesome (it was too late, as I had already given away my copy...).
Ah...well. I might give the series a try, then...even if it will have neither Matt nor Benedickt :D I hear that David Tennant is looking for new work, though

The end really is awesome but 750+ pages is an awful lot for a fantastic ending. I've become a bit more willing to abandon books I've started in the past couple of years and even now I don't do it often so I'm not sure if I started it now I'd make it through or not.

I think Harry Lloyd would be a brilliant Jonathan. Haven't quite figured out who I'd like as Norell, though.

I've never been good at coming up with my own castings. I can kind of good "Oooo that'd be good" when someone else suggests people, but I never really come up with ones of my own.

I have extremely fond memories of Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell because I read it in 2006, when I had just moved and had no friends, and the internet wasn't connected yet, so I spent all my time reading that book for a while. I felt like it saved me from extreme boredom! I really liked it, and the ending was awesome. I'm not sure if I'd find it overlong or not now though.

I'll definitely watch the miniseries though, I think it would make a good one!

That's kind of cool. There are only a few books with me where I can clearly remember where I was in my life when I read them in a way that means anything but it always makes the book just that little bit more special when I do.
