Rachael's Week in BBC Radio Vol. 7 Part II

Two quick additions to the download list for this week.

First, failte_aoife drew my attention to a an adaptation of some detective stories written somewhat contemporaneously with Holmes. They are R Austin Freeman's detective Thorndyke. I initially skipped them because BBC just does too many detective stories and I can't possibly ever listen to them all so I only grab the ones I know something about and this didn't ring any bells but know that I've looked into them, I'm kind of excited about it. So thanks for the rec, failte_aoife!

Second, Radio 4 and 4 Extra are doing a special focus on Irish writer Brian Friel, all on the BBC site and Radio Downloader under Brain Friel Season. I'd skimmed some of it, and it didn't sound too interesting so I decided not to worry about any of it. Then I read this article and it made two of the specific plays sound like strong possibilities of things I'd like so I've quickly downloaded them (they both aired already). The two specific things I grabbed are Translations and Faith Healer.

Ohhh...I also saw the Brian Friel-plays and thought they didn't seem that interesting but you're right some of them do.
And yes...there seem to be millions of crime-adaptions on radio...I also try to limit myself but I end up downloading lots anyway and have no idea when I will ever have the time to listen nto them XD
As said I only read the first Thorndyke-novel so far but I really enjoyed it (and it has some amusing shout-outs to Holmes: in one scene they are watching people on the street and Thorndyke makes an elaborate deduction what one man's job is based on clothes and so on but also insists that it is just guesswork and unless he walked up to him and asks him he won't know for sure and nobody can actually say that he really knows these things with 100% accuracy).

By the way: is your Radio-Downloader working properly? I've been getting a lot of 'Network-Problem'-errors recently. According to the FAQ that's often because of a firewall-problem but I didn't install anything new and so far it never lasted long (usually a few hours later/the next day works fine) so I've been wondering if that's just me or if RadioDownloader/even the BBC-website is having some hiccups.

I'm not having any real issues with RD. There have been a couple of programs not showing up when they should and the search function has never worked for me, but I'm not getting any kind of network problems. Are you getting it on everything or just on a specific program or two? A few weeks back, I was getting some kind of error on a specific problem and when I checked the BBC site, the streaming wasn't even working. After a couple of days, the Beeb must have realized and fixed the file on their end because it suddenly downloaded correctly.
