Month Meme - Day 24

Ganked this from mrstater. Would love to see more people do it, if you've got any time at all!

Day 24: Your political views
Liberal progressive is probably the best label for me. I'm the kind that fumes when people refer to Obama as a radical communist leftie because I'm not even all the way out to communism and Obama, along with the majority of the modern Democratic party, is incredibly right of me. Obama is a barely left of center moderate with a tendency to veer sharply right on all kinds of issues, especially foreign policy and domestic surveillance / civil liberties kind of stuff.

More broadly, I believe that everyone should have the right to do basically whatever he or she wants up to the point that what Person A wants to do interferes with what Person B wants to do. This is the most important thing for me and I'm very big on social rights and equality and generally letting people live their lives however they want without the government interfering (e.g. for gay marriage, for free speech, against spying on your own citizens and porno-scanners at airports). Further, I think the main jobs of any government should be ensuring a basic standard of living for all its citizenry, preventing someone from interfering with someone else's rights, and determining whose right takes priority in those cases of Person A's desires being in conflict with Person B's. This means I believe in things like universal health care, education, social security, etc. and I believe that it is the responsibility of the government to regulate corporations and protect people from the worst rampages of the capitalist system. That might make me a socialist, but I'm not sure about that.

On foreign policy, I think the US needs to stop bombing the shit out of other countries and thinking that will make them like us more. Beyond that, things get much trickier. I don't like the idea of interfering with other sovereign nations, but I also think the world of nations needs to take seriously the idea that we will never let something like the Holocaust happen again. Except we let it happen again every day in Africa while bombing the shit out of the oil countries and pretending we are doing it in the name of Democracy and Freedom and stopping genocide and whatever other nonsense we feel like spouting. I guess I want to believe in a serious international community working to stop genocide and the worst of atrocities, even if that means war, but then taking seriously the need to rebuild the destroyed nations in order to prevent it happening again a generation later. I've no idea how one actually accomplishes that without being imperialistic and having some nations, often those with the least grounds to stand on, dictate morality to the rest of the world, but I know it isn't done by the US unilaterally sending drones into sovereign nations with whom we aren't even at war.

Awesome! I tend to parse as a left of center liberal-I only look like a pinko commie radical when I opine that hurricanes are caused by barometric changes and not by, y'know, gay people getting married...

Oh, gods, tell me about it! The number of times I've had family members tell me that I've clearly been brainwashed by the liberal academics when I mention things like global warming is probably approaching infinity.
