Too many emotions for one week!

Tags: , ,
This has been one of the most up-and-down weeks I've had in a while.

Monday night my newer laptop (named Threepio) died. I couldn't get it to boot at all. It is still under warranty from the store, though not the manufacturer, so I called them and none of their tricks (the same things I'd already tried) would get it to boot so we assumed completely dead hard drive and they're sending me a box to ship it to them. They will presumably replace the hard drive with a refurbished one and then send it back to me, meaning the whole process could be made more convenient and cheaper if they'd just send me the hard drive and let me swap them myself, but they won't do that. Of course, on Tuesday I tried turning the computer on and it booted right up and has worked fine ever since. My conclusion from this is the hard drive isn't completely dead but is on its last legs and should still be replaced.

Tuesday morning, I went jogging in the woods near my house, stepped on a root wrong, twisted my ankle, tumbled down a hill, and laid on the ground in intense pain for a while. After a few moments, I was able to inspect my ankle and it was already swelling and discolored and putting weight on it hurt but was manageable. So I called me friend who had been my roommate for exactly one week at that point and told him I might be able to hobble the kilometer or so to the road but the additional kilometer and a half or so from there to the house was not going to happen so please bring a car and come get me. He did and then spent the morning driving me to multiple doctor's offices (by which point I could no longer put weight on it at all), going to the library for me to get some dissertation stuff from my locker there so I could work at home, and bringing me things from around the house as I flopped on the couch with an ice pack. The final verdict on the ankle is bad sprain but no break. I still have to keep it elevated, occasionally iced, in a brace, and no weight on it (yay crutches) for at least a week.

Wednesday, said friend / roommate defended his dissertation so has now earned his PhD. Considering he should have been prepping for his defense, I feel kind of bad that he spent all the day before taking care of me and my bum ankle, but he kept telling me it was no big deal and he passed his defense, so I guess it didn't screw him up. His defending is fantastically awesome and not so awesome simultaneously for reasons I've gone into before and would prefer not to discuss in this post. After his defense, he was bouncing off the walls (go figure) so we played Mario Kart all afternoon before going out with a large group to a bar in the evening. Anytime we got into an argument all afternoon, he would try to tell me I had to defer to him because he's a doctor now. I'm sure you can guess just how convincing I found that argument.

Also Wednesday, my older laptop busted. The left hinge came apart so I can't really open or close the lid, which makes it difficult to move the laptop around. This is the second laptop of that model I have had. The first one did the exact same thing while it was barely within the two-year warranty and they said they couldn't fix it so they'd send me a new one (the current one). With two computers doing this, I googled it and discovered it's a common problem with these models because they overheat right there and melt the hinge pieces or cause them to crack. Groovy.

Today, my mother decided I needed a new laptop thanks to both the current ones being mildly problematic. So she ordered me one and it should arrive within a couple of weeks. That was rather unexpected and all kinds of awesome.

TLDR: One laptop has a dying hard drive, one laptop technically works fine but has a busted case, my mother is buying me a new laptop, I'm on crutches for at least a week with a sprained ankle, and one of my best friends defended his dissertation so is now a PhD.
Feeling: Drained
Exploring: Couch with foot up

Aw, damn, that looks like I'm toasting your misfortune. It was meant to be more comiseratory tea.

No worries! I mean, it's The Doctor. Who cares if he is bringing tea for toasting or commiserating as long as he's bringing it? ;)
