Memes ahoy!

Tags: ,
mrstater tagged me for a meme. Wow, it's been ages since I've done one of these. It has been so long, I feel like doing two so I'm also stealing an email forward from a friend and posting it as a meme. How's about that?

Meme the first: Generic from mrstater:

FIRST: If you've been tagged, you must write your answers in your own LJ and replace any question that you dislike with a new, original question.

SECOND: Tag eight people. Don't refuse to do that. Unless you really don't want to of course. And if you're not tagged and you want to do it, then do!

You can travel back in time five years; what's one thing you'd say to yourself?
Getting your PhD takes a really long time. Are you 100% sure that's what you want to do? Have you considered maybe going to library school and getting your MLS? That takes a lot less time and if when you're done you still want the PhD you can still get one of those, too.

What did you last eat?
Fried food products at the bar last night. Specifically, fried cheese (beer-battered cheese pints) and fried potatoes (french fries).

What kind of books do you read?
Almost anything I can get into my hands. I'm not big on romance / over-the-top chick lit or horror. Anything else is far game. Recent things I've read include the complete Bone series (fantasy adventure graphic novels that are uber awesome!), Roma (the history of the Roman empire in novel / short story format), Beowulf (which I didn't really like), and some Star Wars comics. I don't read a lot of non-fic books for fun because I read so much nonfic for work and blogs and news on the web, but lately I've been checking out some books on the history of blues and fol-rock and on Woodstock whenever I'm in the bookstore. I might get some from the library after Christmas.

What are you reading right now?
Right now? My computer screen. :P
Sorry... At the moment I'm reading Vanity Fair in book form and Dracula as an ebook.

If you could be anywhere right now, where would it be?
I'm not really sure. Somewhere that isn't Williamsburg sounds good, but I'll be getting that tomorrow when I fly home for the winter break.

What's really creepy?
Skeezy drunks who try to flirt

Name one odd item within five feet of you.
Six Mr. Potato Heads dresssed up as Star Wars characters (Luke Frywalker, Princess Tater, Yam Solo, Spuda Fett, Darth Mash, and a Spudtrooper; Darth Tater and Artoo-Potatoo are at my folks')

What's your current fandom/obsession/addiction?
Fandoms most active in my head right now: Hogan's Heroes and the Monkees (hooray for cheesy 1960s TV comedies!)
Obsessions/addiction: Folk-rock with an emphasis on sixties and seventies protest music

What did you really want to do today that you didn't?
It is 8:00 am so I'm not sure I can say. I do have a very long list of things to do before I fly out tomorrow morning and suspect I won't get everything done, but here's hoping.

What are you most excited for?
At the moment, hanging with my friends tonight eating pizza made with our homemade cheese.

What websites do you always visit when you go online?
Google Reader, LJ, Facebook

What was the last thing you bought?
A couple of drinks at the bar last night.

What do you want right this minute, off the top of your head?
My slight headache to go away from the top of my head to some distant place from which it hall never return.

What's your biggest procrastination method?
The interwebs or being anal about something and overorganizing it. At the moment that is my music collection.

Anything you regret about 2009?
Not making more progress on my dissertation.

Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter?
Autumn, hands down. Even with the nonstop raking this year (the final total was 142.5 33-gallon bags of leaves, by the way), I loved autumn and am sad to see the backside of it.

Say something to the person who tagged you.
Lisa, you are awesome. You are a great friend in every way and I only wish I had more time to chat with you.

Meme the second: Holiday from lady_katvic via email:

1. Wrapping paper or gift bags?
Paper with ribbons and bows by preference, but awkward things can go in bags.

2. Real tree or artificial?
Fake all the way. Thanks to my sinus allergies, I'd die with a real tree in the house.

3. When do you put up the tree?
Depends. I don't put one up here since I always go home for the holiday. When I was also going home for Thanksgiving, we'd put it up that weekend if we could. Now, it is frequently up when I arrive but sometimes we put it up my first weekend home. It doesn't really matter to me.

4. When do you take the tree down?
Sometime after New Year's but before I come back to school.

5. Do you like eggnog?
I'm picky as to brand, but the kinds I like, I absolutely LOVE!

6. Favorite gift received as a child?
At the time, I was most in love with my gloworm. See:

7. Hardest person to buy for?

8. Easiest person to buy for?

9. Do you have a nativity scene?
I think my mom has little figurines of a pregnant Mary on a donkey that is being led by a walking Joseph that she keeps out year 'round. That's the closest thing I can think of. I certainly don't have one myself.

10. Mail or email Christmas cards?
Mail, assuming I have the time. Finishing those is on today's TO Do list.

11. Worst Christmas gift you ever received?
I had an aunt who would almost always give me kiddie religious books (Bible Stories for Children kind of thing) as a kid.

12. Favorite Christmas Movie?
I don't know. Maybe Love, Actually.

13. When do you start shopping for Christmas?
Whenever I see something for someone. I think this year I got the first one in July.

14. Have you ever recycled a Christmas present?

15. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas?
All the baked goods!

16. Lights on the tree?
Yeppers. Multicolored strings of them!

17. Favorite Christmas song?
Little Drummer Boy or Jolly Old St. Nicholas

18. Travel at Christmas or stay home?
I go home but for an extended period. We usually then go to my grandparents' between Christmas and New Year's.

19. Can you name all of Santa's reindeers?
Sure. Rudolph out front then Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Thunder, and Lightning. OK, so I translated the last two names from German back into English. Close enough, right?

20. Angel on the tree top or a star?
This question is what is known as a false dichotomy. Those are not the only two options available on the face of the Earth.

21. Open the presents Christmas Eve or morning?

22. Most annoying thing about this time of the year?
All the complaining people do about things like too many people in the stores, stores having Christmas things for sale before Halloween, and annoying Christmas songs. Also, the whole idea of there being a War on Christmas in America because somehow being polite and not trying to force your holiday on others is war and somehow Christmas is threatened by all this despite its clearly dominant place in culture.

23. Favorite ornament, theme, or color?
Not a clue.

24. What do you want for Christmas this year?
A few extra hours each day would be nice. More realistically, I asked my folks for a clock for my motorcycle.

I suppose I should tag people. Feel free to do either meme, both, or neither.
bratanimus, cuteej4, jdbracknell, littlepixiechic, sandykidd, train_lindz, wildmagelet, and insert your name here if you want to do this!

OMG, I loved my Glo Worm. Even after my dog bit it and it stopped glowing.
What's Taters, Precious?
mrstater at 2:17 pm on 15 December 2009 (UTC) (Link)
I thought you needed a meme to help you get into the holiday spirit. ;) I've missed chatting with you, too, btw. I haven't been on AIM much these days, actually. Pregnancy has really screwed with my schedule.

I had that same Glo-worm! (Didn't all the 80s children?)
littlepixiechic at 1:05 am on 16 December 2009 (UTC) (Link)
I didn't have a big glow worm like that, but I had little ones with a tree house. They were awesome!
