Weekend fun and a Meme

Tags: ,
I had a fantastic weekend that created a miserable Monday. It started Wednesday, that's how good of a weekend it was.

When I was on the way home from the grant proposal workshop Wednesday night, I got a call from one of the guys who had been there. Another grad student and good friend who doesn't live in Williamsburg anymore, Ed, was in town. They wanted to know if I wanted to meet them for dinner. We went to one of our old hangouts and has lousy service, lousy bar food, and a fantastic time hanging out anyway.

My best friend in this town is Lucie. She's from the Czech Republic and went home before Christmas and stayed for two months to do some research. She got back into town late Wednesday and we hung out on Thursday. We chilled at a coffee shop, went out for dinner, and just chatted forever, catching each other up on what's been going on for the last two months.

Friday night there was a party, in part because Ed was only going to be in town for about a week. It was lots of fun hanging out with everyone and I ate tons of junk food and the party didn't end until around 2:00 am. For some reason I decided to wake up at 7:30 on Saturday. No idea why but I'll live. The two guys I hang out with a lot, Jack and Andrew, Ed, and I decided to see if we could hook up a game system to an overhead projector in one of the classrooms in the history department building and play Mario Kart on a 20-foot screen. Unfortunately when we got to the building we discovered there was some kind of middle school camp going on there. We went to Jack's house and were going to play there but then decided it was too nice out to spend all afternoon playing video games inside. So we went to a restaurant with a patio area, got some bread, cheese, and meat, and sat outside munching and chatting until the sun went down. Lucie came and joined us and then we went back to Jack's and ate junk food and played Mario Kart until around 1:30 am.

Sunday I again woke up bloody early but I decided to go for a walk to make up at least a little for the non-stop junk I'd been eating since the bar Wednesday night. The regular gang got together at 10:00 for breakfast and to say goodbye to Ed. He had a but of time, so Jack, Andrew, Ed, and I went back up to the history department building to try Mario Kart on the big screen again. There were still middle schoolers around, but there was one empty classroom in a corner. The door was locked, but I popped it open and we had a blast. I can now say there is nothing as amazing as Mario Kart on a 20-foot screen! We only played for a couple of hours before we started to go cross-eyed, but it was so cool! I came home planning to get a bit of work done. Instead, I got a call from a couple of friends who ended up coming over to watch the Oscars. There were a few misses, but overall I thought this was one of the best Oscar telecasts in recent memory. I again got to bed late and woke up early today.

After all those late nights, early mornings, and way too much junk food, I'm tired and run down today and my stomach is acting up. I got nothing done this weekend so I had a ton I wanted to do today and only got some of it done. It absolutely has to be done tomorrow, and I think it can be but it will be a long day. I think it was worth it, though. I'm so much more relaxed and happy than I've been in a while. Even if I am tired and will have to go to bed really early tonight in order to be alert to get everything done tomorrow.

mrstater tagged me for a meme.

A) People who have been tagged must write their answers on their journal and replace any question that they dislike with a new, original question.
B) Tag eight people. Don't refuse to do that. Don't tag who tagged you.

1. Make a list of 5 things you can see without getting up:
(1) Bowl of Jelly Belly Jelly Beans
(2) Water stein
(3) Hairbrush
(4) Loads of books for my dissertation
(5) My bed (with Star Wars sheets on it!)

2. How do you style your hair?
My hair is long, thin, and flat. Usually, I brush it and put a little gel on the top to keep the frizzies to a minimum. Sometimes I put on a hair band or put it in a pony tail or braid it.

3. What are you wearing now?
Bath robe and a towel around my hair (aren't you glad you asked?).

4. What's your occupation?
Grad student

5. The best thing to happen to you as of late?
I had a fantastic weekend!

6. What is one word you would use to describe yourself?
Odd

7. What's your current fandom/obsession/addiction?
Hogan's Heroes is the latest.

8. What was the last thing you ate today?
Cream of Wheat

9. What was the last text message you received?
Some junk advertisement. I hate getting those because I don't text so I don't have any data plan and it costs like a quarter or something for every one that I get.

10. What websites do you always visit when you go online?
Net Vibes, LJ, Facebook, Gmail, Google Reader, and GoodReads. I spend way too much time online.

11. What was the last thing you bought?
Food

12. What are you listening to right now?
Hogan's Heroes is on in the background but I'm mostly ignoring it.

13. What do you think about before you go to bed at night?
I usually have ideas bouncing around in my head for something I want to write. Sometimes it is fanfic, but lately it has been exclusively dissertation stuff: funding and grant applications, emails to profs, introduction chapter, etc.

14. What was the last CD you bought?
Ray Stevens Sings Sinatra … Say What?

15. What is your favorite weather, and why?
Warm but not hot, sunny, a few white clouds in a perfect blue sky, and a light breeze. I like it best because it is perfect for most anything: hiking or playing outside, lying on a blanket for a picnic or reading a book, sitting in the sun and hanging with friends, etc.

16. If you could play any musical instrument, which one would you play?
Guitar

17. How are you?
Not so hot.

18. What's something you'd like to say to someone right now?
Cut me some slack, people!

19. What's one of your favorite movies?
I hate these kind of questions because I can never pick a favorite. I know the rules say I can change a question I don't like, but I'm too lazy.

I tag: kate_scarlet, labellerose, jdbracknell, lady_katvic, littlepixiechic, sandykidd, train_lindz and anybody else who hasn't been tagged yet and wants to do it (I don't know who has been tagged or not).

I think my brain short-circuited at the words "Mario Kart" and "20 foot screen". It's probably a good thing that I can't conceivably think of a way to emulate that feat. Or that would be me, glued to my seat, clutching my wheel, for an insane amount of time. :)

It was the most amazing thing ever! We were in a smaller room and had to be closer to the screen than was ideal. We're hoping to try again in one of the bigger rooms and see if that fixes the cross-eyed and neck-craning problems. I'm optimistic.
