Is it Disney time yet? Please?

Tags: , ,
Honest, I've been reading comments that y'all have been leaving on my posts. I appreciate it and I'll get around to answering them eventually. I promise. Also, Happy Birthday to mrstater and godricgal. I sent y'all things on Facebook but figure it can't hurt to wish y'all the best over here as well.

Word from Houston is basically things suck. Most of the city still doesn't have power. Gas and food are in very short supply. Kasey still can't go to work because of all the glass from broken windows in downtown Houston. At least one of my sister's coworkers had serious damage done to her home and doesn't have insurance to cover it and can't find enough food for her kids. Katrina is cleaning out my parents' and her pantries and giving her coworkers everything my family won't eat in the three days before they leave for Florida. Since my parents are now flying in and out of west Texas, they'll buy food out there and bring it back in the van if there are still shortages when we come home.

In other news, one of my cousins apparently downed a bottle of sleeping pills last night or this morning. He was released from the hospital early this afternoon and is with his mom. I'm not sure how I feel about this.

While things are generally falling apart around my family, I'm doing fine. I'm a little emotionally drained and stressed, but I just keep chugging away on my Dutch and dissertation stuff. I'm not sure I'm getting anywhere with any of it, but I'm working. I had the hardest time with a Dutch lesson the other day. I could understand the Dutch just fine, but couldn't pick the correct pictures because it was on telling time. I flunked telling time in second grade and still have a very tough time with it so you could ask me to pick the clock that shows "quarter to seven" or to pick that clock that shows "kwart voor zeven" and either way I'm going to suck!

My basic plans for the next three days are:
Today - work on dissertation and Dutch all day; go to a movie tonight with some friends (man do I need it!); work on packing while watching The Daily Show and Colbert Report before collapsing into bed
Thursday - repeat of Wednesday but substitute dinner with friends to celebrate one friend's birthday (how did I end up with so many friends/relatives with birthdays on Sept 16, 17, and 18?) for the movie
Friday - volunteer at the elementary school in the morning; finish any last-minute scramble packing and house straightening; be on the road by 2:45 to get to the airport to catch a plane to Orlando
Feeling: Tired
Exploring: Sectional in the living room
Listening: Big Maceo Merriweather - Worried Life Blues

Thanks very much!

Sorry to hear about the troubles back in Texas. I hope Disney is a welcome break for you all and by the time your parents get back, things have progressed enough for repairs to start taking place. Fingers are crossed for you all.

I'm sure everything will be fine. Of course, my parents' van refused to start this morning so they had to have my uncle take them to the airport and have added the van to the long list of things to deal with when we get back, so maybe things won't be quite so fine. *sigh* I think I'm going to try my best to forget the rest of the world exists this week and I'll check back in with reality when I get back.
What's Taters, Precious?

Aw, hon, I'm sorry everything's totally sucky right now. Your family is getting pre-holiday crap to the extreme. There's nothing like Disney for getting away from it all, though. Hang in there!

Yeah. My parents' van wouldn't start this morning so they had to get my uncle to take them to the airport and will worry about fixing the van when they get back. We really need the pre-holiday crap to end and just get with the holidaying! I leave for the airport in 30 minutes and it can't come soon enough!
