Ike Update

I've spoken with my sister a couple of times today. They're fine. They have no power (what a shocker) and there was a small leak so they may have a little bit of roof damage, but nothing appears to be majorly wrong and no one was hurt. They've got bottled water and enough bread and peanut butter to feed a small army in case the power isn't back on before everything in the fridge and freezer goes bad so I'm not worried about them.

I've also heard from my best friend there in Houston. She said everything is fine at her house, though their neighbors had part of the roof blown off. She and her mother drove over to my parents' house (why she could manage this when my sister, who lives closer, hadn't bothered is another matter) and said everything looks OK there. Behind out house, there are essentially three or four levels. First, there is Clear Creek, which is usually dry but floods easily when there is major rain. Up a few yards from that is the beginning of our backyard, which is a large grass area. Up several feet is our pool and then up several more feet is the deck and house. To flood the pool, the creek has to rise 12 or so feet and it needs to be up around 20 feet to get to the house. Kathy said the pool was flooded but the water would need another three or so feet to get to the house and was supposed to be going down rather than up so we should be fine.

From things I saw on the news, my mom's work area probably has significantly more damage (I think CNN at one point was showing the side ripped off a hotel she passes on her way to work every day). There is obviously going to be a lot of damage and clean up necessary in the region as a whole and my family will be without power for a while, but it seems like those close to me pretty much managed to escape the devastation.
Feeling: Relieved
Exploring: Desk
Listening: Weather Channel, CNN, and MSNBC (whichever one is least annoying for the moment)

Oh good, I'm so glad to hear that. It seems like the storm as a whole wasn't as bad as expected; we've got light rain here, but nothing like they said we would.

I'm glad that everyone's ok and that there doesn't seem to be any major damage to your parents' house or your sister's place. Boo hurricanes.
