Title: Nymph, in thy orisons be all my sins remember'd.
Rating: All Audiences
Characters: Remus Lupin and Tonks
Setting: Shortly before Order of the Phoenix
Format: Ficlet (just under 800 words).
Summary: "You despise your name enough to hex a fellow member of the Order?"
Also Posted at: This was originally written for Prompt 13 (June 28) of the rt_challenge: One Year of Canon Ficathon: "But worlds are made of hello and goodbye." – e. e. cummings.
Disclaimer: I own none of this. J. K. Rowling and assorted companies including but not limited to Bloomsbury, Scholastic, and Warner Brothers own everything. They also make all the money. I am just having fun and in no way seek financial profit from their property.
Note: This is sort of a companion piece to Tripping Up though both can be read independently. Tripping Up was my version of the first time Tonks' realized she liked Remus. This takes place a few days after that and is Remus' realization that he fancies Tonks. Also, I'm really not sure what is with the Shakespeare title. That quote just jumped in my head when I typed my first line of this story and wouldn't leave so I kept it.

Nymph, in thy orisons be all my sins remember'd.

"Good morning, Nymph…"

Remus' voice trailed off as a wand suddenly appeared under his nose.

"Finish that thought, and you won't be saying anything else for a long time," Nymphadora Tonks informed him from the other end of the wand. Her cheerful smile and teasing eyes belied the seriousness of her threat.

"I was under the impression that Nympha…"

"Remus." Her grin was gone and the wand twitched a little closer to him.

He looked her over, carefully weighing his options. She was an Auror and her reflexes were obviously excellent since she had been able to draw her wand before he could finish saying her name. Going for his own wand was out of the question. The only thing readily at hand was his breakfast, and a plate of fruit would not make an adequate weapon. He could try calling her bluff. "You despise your name enough to hex a fellow member of the Order?"

"Yes," she said simply.

So much for that idea, he decided. There was really only one option left: temporary retreat. "Ah. Then perhaps we should start over." Her wand lowered fractionally. "Hello, Tonks. What brings you to headquarters this morning?"

Her grin returned and her wand disappeared inside the robes she wore over ripped jeans and a t-shirt. "Wotcher, Remus. I just stopped by to let you know I won't be able to make the meeting tonight. Someone reported a hot tip about Sirius Black possibly being sighted in West Yorkshire and I've been picked to go investigate." She sat down in the chair next to him while rolling her eyes.

He laughed. "I would wish you luck but I am far too certain you will fail and don't want to waste the sentiment."

She punched him lightly on the arm. "Thanks for the vote of confidence," she said sounding rather insulted and hurt.

Remus was surprised to feel his stomach clench at the almost-pain in her voice. He knew she was teasing, and yet for some inexplicable reason he wanted to reassure her that he had the fullest confidence in her. He shook his head to clear his confusion. "I don't know the source of your tip, but my sources tell me Sirius Black is not in West Yorkshire."

Tonks immediately began to act the part of an Auror on an investigation. "Who are your sources? Where do they indicate he is?" she interrogated.

"I don't know his exact whereabouts now but my ears indicated he was asleep down the hall from my bedroom last night. His snoring kept me awake half the night."

She laughed and he felt his heart leap at the sound. Again, he did not understand his reaction and shook his head in confusion. She noticed his movement and looked at him quizzically. Not knowing what else to say he pushed his plate towards her. "Would you like something?" he asked.

"No, thanks," she got up from her chair. "I need to be getting to work." As she walked by him on her way to the door, he thought he felt her hand brush lightly across his shoulder blades.

"Goodbye, Ms. Tonks," he called to her retreating back, emphasizing the title to indicate the merely temporary nature of his earlier retreat.

"Its just Tonks," she said, turning back to face him. He wasn't certain but her cheeks appeared to be slightly pinker than they had been before. "Goodbye, Remus," she added as she left the room.

He stared at the spot where she had been for several moments, pondering the odd conversation. Why had he wanted to console her when she was merely pretending to be upset? Why had he felt so happy at the sound of her laugh? He was acting like… "Merlin, help me," he whispered to the empty room. He could not be falling for Tonks!

He was almost twice her age. No you're not, whispered a traitorous little voice in the back of his head. Close enough, he shot back at it.

He was living in his friend's house and could carry all his worldly possessions on the back of a broom. She wears ripped jeans, not ball gowns. She wouldn't expect much, rejoined the traitorous voice. But she deserves it, he answered.

For the third time that morning, he shook his head in a vain attempt to clear his confusion. It did not matter what the annoying traitor in his mind said. Tonks was a charming, fun, intelligent, attractive, young Auror. He was a poor, old, stuffy werewolf. Even if he did fancy Tonks, she would never feel the same about him. He felt his skin tingle. Then why did she brush your back as she left? whispered his treacherous mind.

I'm really happy to hear that you feel you could understand both Tonks and Remus in this. I always worry when I write from one charactter's POV that the other's thought process will get totally obscured so I'm glad this worked for you.

Doesn't everybody have one of those little voices in the back of their mind that they just can't shut up? The trouble is learning when to listen to it and when to tell the little traitor to shut up! Hopefully Remus will listen to his a little more often.
