Is it bedtime yet?

Last night I decided I didn't want to cook or do dishes so I ordered pizza. I decided to have a Coke (cherry vanilla, yummy) with my pizza. Silly me. I forgot that I haven't been drinking Coke lately and it is therefore dangerous for me to have one after about 2:00. The caffeine buzz finally wore off enough for me to go to bed around 4:00 am. Despite going to bed about 4 to 5 hours later than usual, I got up at about my normal time, maybe a little earlier, so I am exhausted today.

I only had one thing I was supposed to do today: pay rent. Who knew that would be such a fiasco? I give Kelly a check for my part of the rent and she writes a check for the entire rent every month. She gave me the check last night so I ran it over this morning. Except she forgot that they raised our rent last month. I never even looked at the check so I didn't realize the mistake until the lady at the apartment complex office pointed it out. She asked if I had a checkbook or cash to make up the difference. I said I didn't but could bring it by this afternoon or tomorrow and she said that'd be fine.

I left the comic book store and nearly dropped my bike at a stop sign. I was on a hill and tying to keep one foot on the foot break so I would roll backwards and keep the other on the pavement so I wouldn't fall over. I started to go and somehow managed to kill the engine. Of course instead of knocking me off balance towards the side with the foot on the ground, I started to fall the other way. I got my foot down before the bike or I really hit the ground, but then had to fight with it to get it back fully upright without dropping it. That thing is kind of heavy.

Accident narrowly averted, I swung by the comic store (yay, comics!), came home and wrote out a check for the difference on the rent, and headed back to the management office. I'm not sure if there was an accident or what but traffic was at a complete standstill. I just sat with the engine off on my bike forever. Even when a car ahead of me would get fed up and do a u-turn in the middle of the street and everyone would inch up to fill the gap, I just pushed with my feet and then rolled (at least we were aimed downhill) rather than turning on the motor. It wouldn't have been that bad, but we are really into summer now and Williamsburg summers are brutally hot and atrociously humid. When I finally got to the management office and took off my helmet, you would have sworn I'd just got out of the shower, my poor head was so sweaty.

When I got into the office, the lady I spoke with this morning wasn't at the front desk. The lady who was at the desk looked at the two checks and said she needed one check for the full amount so she was confused. I asked why she couldn't take both and she said they can't take two forms of payment and that is in my lease and started giving me a lecture about I signed it and blah blah blah. I interrupted her and said that the person I spoke with this morning said I could because of the mix up with the increase in rent. She said she was the office manager and she couldn't authorize that but she stuck her head into the office door behind her, which is the actual office of the lady with whom I spoke this morning. The first lady said she meant to come back with a brand new check for the whole amount. I asked why she had asked me if I could make up the difference with cash if they couldn't accept two forms of payment and she said that she had been willing to make an exception if I had it with me this morning but since I couldn't do it right then she wouldn't take it now. So I came home again and I'll have to get a new check from Kelly tonight and try again tomorrow.

Seriously, can I go to bed yet?

You're kidding me re: the checks! I'd have lost my temper with those women! I think you definitely need to go to bed.

Be careful with your bike!

I was so frustrated. But I figured with the lack of sleep, annoyance at traffic, and general bad temper from the heat and humidity, it was probably best that I just leave since any reaction on my part would be fueled as much by factors other than the immediate impetus and that's not really fair.

It's all good. It really wasn't that big of a deal. Just minor clumsiness on my part.

Wow, that business with the checks is really dumb, especially since they weren't clear about it in the first place.

I know. It was all rather ridiculous.
