Dutch, teaching, and me as a Mary Sue

Tags: ,
The Dutch is going well. I'm really enjoying learning it and want to do it all the time. Last night I was having problems getting the program to run and kept thinking about what else I could do. I was too tired to get much work done on my lecture for tomorrow and was looking for something fun to do. I wanted to work on my Dutch but couldn't. Every other option that came to mind, watching TV, reading a novel, reading fanfic, writing fanfic, working on the Mary Sue meme, etc. were met with the mental objection of "But I want to work on Dutch!" I'm as bad as a kid with a new toy but I'm telling myself that is a good thing.

Teaching is exhausting. My schedule right now is write a lecture Monday and Tuesday morning, deliver it Tuesday afternoon, write another lecture Wednesday and Thursday morning, deliver it Thursday afternoon, do nothing on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The problems with this are many. The lectures aren't nearly as good as they could be if I put more time into them. I have no wiggle room if I get sick or have to do something else on one of my lecture writing days. My students sometimes ask what we'll be doing next class because they might miss and I have to BS an answer because I don't know yet what we're doing the next class. You get the basic idea. I'm trying to convince myself to do a lecture or two this weekend so I can have at least one lecture worth of wiggle room, but I know I'm not going to want to do it. We'll see if my procrastination or my sense wins out. Anyone want to place bets?

bratanimus tagged me to do the Mary Sue meme that's floating around. I can't decide if I should hug her or slug her for that. I've been working on it and it is so much fun to try to make myself into an uber-perfect character within the Harry Potter universe. I'm surprised, and somewhat scared, at how easy it has been to transfer traits from my real life into the Harry Potter world and how easily the entire concept has flowed from that. The problem is that I've already spent far too long coming up with and fleshing out the idea and I've just started writing and I'm at over a page and still have yet to get my little character past her 11th birthday and to Hogwarts. I have a meeting at 5 that I've no idea how long it will last, I still need to write a lecture for tomorrow, and I'm sitting here creating a life story for a Mary Sue. Oh well. Hopefully I'll be able to finish the meme and have it up before the meeting. If not, it will have to wait until after my lecture tomorrow because when I get back from the meeting I'll really have to spend the rest of the night working on the lecture.

I can't wait to read your history of magic specialist. I don't think my Mary-Sue was that much like me! I mean, I'm hardly a werewolf!

I am seriously having was too much literally putting me (with a heavy dose of perfection added on top) into a magical context.

Erm, my vote would be hug, please. ;) You know, you could always turn that Mary Sue into a full-fledged fic, lol. :D

But siriusly, if you are swamped, no worries! :)

I can do hug. *hugs*

I'm back from my meeting and this Mary Sue thing is just WAY too much fun for me to stop. I'm at the top of my fourth single-spaced page and I'm going to finish it and then write my lecture. Hopefully it won't take too much longer and who needs sleep anyway, right?

*hugs back* :D

Yeah, sleep is highly overrated. ;)

I finished and posted my Mary Sue and then spent maybe two hours working on the lecture before deciding I really do like sleep. So I went to bed with notes and a plan but no actual lecture. Class isn't until 3:30. Plenty of time! I hope!
