2007 Summary Memes

Tags: ,
I'll do a proper holiday summary post tomorrow once everyone else in my family is back to work and the holidays are officially over. For now, have some end-of-the-year memes.

"What did you do this year?" meme – ganked from littlepixiechic

1. Where did you begin 2007?
At my parents' house in Houston, frantically trying to finish final papers. Actually, I went back and checked my last post of 2006. I said there that I finished my next-to-last paper at 11:40 pm or so on 31 Dec 2006 so I guess I counted down to midnight, went to bed, and got up on 1 Jan 2007 to finish the last paper.

2. What did you do in 2007 that you'd never done before?
Learned to ride a motorcycle (and then bought one!).

3. Did you keep your new year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I don't make New Year's resolutions.

4. Were you in school (anytime this year)?
Well... sort of. Since I took my comps in the Spring and worked independently in the Fall, I wasn't taking classes but I was still registered and enrolled as a full-time student.

5. Did anyone close to you give birth?
One of my cousins had a baby boy. Unfortunately, he was born preemie and only lived a few days.

6. Any new additions to your family?
My cousin's baby and my sister's husband (he counts as a new addition, right?)

7. Did anyone close to you die?
2005, yes. 2006, yes. 2007, I don't think so. Go 2007!

8. Did you know anybody who got married?
My sister!

9. What countries did you visit?
I stayed in the US. It is a pretty big country, though.

10. How did you earn your money?
I didn't do a whole heck of a lot for it, actually. In the Spring, I got paid to study for my comprehensive exams and then I'm not really certain what I got paid for doing in the Fall. Over the summer, I taught reading classes and more than earned my pay.

11. Where did most of your money go?
Rent, food, various forms of entertainment (including but not limited to books, music, electronics, and a motorcycle).

12. Did you have any encounters with the police?
I talked to them about the fact that they were essentially putting my ID theft case into the "Unsolved Cases" bin and not worrying about it anymore.

13. What would you like to have in 2008 that you lacked in 2007?
Money is always nice. Also, more time, thought I suspect time management is more the issue than time itself.

14. What date from 2007 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
20 October 2007 because my sister got married.

15. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Passing my doctoral comprehensive exams and being ABD (All But Dissertation for my PhD).

16. What was your biggest failure?
I'm not really sure I had a failure.

17. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Nothing outside the usual array of sniffles and coughs plus my Crohn's which has been under control.

18. Where did you go on holidays/vacation?
I mostly went back-and-forth between school in Virginia and my parents' place in Houston, Texas. I also made a couple of trips out to west Texas to visit my grandparents and one jaunt up to Maryland to visit Julia (lj user="littlepixiechic">.

19. What was the best thing you bought?
Motorcycle, though the furniture for my new apartment comes in a close second.

20. Whose behavior merited celebration?
I don't know. I'm sure everyone I know did at least one thing worthy of being celebrated.

21. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
I supposed some celebrities and the like did things that royally sucked but I can't say I care enough to be appalled and depressed.

22. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Passing my comps!

23. Did you move anywhere?
I moved off campus into an apartment with Kelly.

24. Where do you live now?
Mostly a nice apartment in Williamsburg, Virginia but also at my parents' house in Houston, Texas

25. What song will always remind you of 2007?
None.

Favorites of 2007 Meme – ganked from mrstater

I'm indecisive as to how this meme should be interpreted. Is it things released in 2007 or anything I experienced in 2007 regardless of the release date? Since I can't decide, I'm going to provide both answers where applicable.

1. Book
Released in 2007: Star Wars Legacy of the Force 7 Fury. I've been increasingly disappointed in the Star Wars novel series and while the publishers have been learning from their mistakes, they've not been learning quickly enough. This book, however, completely rocked and restored my faith in Star Wars, at least until the next book is released in about two months.

Anything: The Island at the Center of the World. This history of Dutch Manhattan, written by a journalist, has several flaws from a professional historian POV. Who cares? It is very well written, decently researched, and a fascinating beginning point for anyone with even the slightest passing interest in New Netherland/New York histoy. Even its flaws got me thinking more than the best aspects of some other historical works.

2. Movie: Hairspray. I never got around to seeing this when it was first out. I love old musicals but find musicals of the last 50 years or so to be very hit or miss. I finally saw this one at my mom's parents a couple of days after Christmas and loved it. What really blew me away is that my grandmother liked it enough to buy it on DVD when it has a very overt message of racial equality and she is one of the most bigoted people I know. Considering she just kept talking about John Travolta, I'm wondering if she slept through any scene without him in it and missed the message of the film.

3. Anime: I don't watch Anime.

4. TV Series
Released in 2007: I really don't watch TV unless Spurs basketball games count as a TV series. I used to watch Gray's Anatomy, but gave up on it a while ago.

Anything: This isn't something new I experienced, but I did watch the entirety of Highlander: The Series on DVD during the course of 2007 and almost finished a second run through. I love that show so very much.

5. Event: Toss up between passing my comprehensive exams and my sister's wedding.

6. Theatre: Pathetically enough, the only thing I remember seeing this year was Shakespeare's Measure for Measure. The play is great, the performance I saw of it was tolerable.

7. Manga Chapter: I don't read Manga.

8. New Season: Again, I really don't watch TV. Though if we are counting Spurs basketball games as a series, they won the championship in 2007 so I would count that as a very enjoyable new season.

9. News: I don't know. There were lots of science tidbits along the way that I found interesting, but nothing stands out right now.

10. Character: The rat chef in Ratatouille.

2007 in 40 Questions (some of which overlaps with the other two memes) – ganked from mrstater

1) Was 2007 a good year for you?
Not too bad. It was crazy and hectic, but a lot of good things happened and I've never figured out how to make a lot happen with some craziness.

17) Who are your favorite new friends?
Nedja and Chase. They are great people.

18) What was your favorite month of 2007?
May. I finished my comps in April, was still getting paid by the school and didn't start my summer job until June so I basically spent May relaxing and learning to ride a motorcycle.

Depends on how you define homeland. I didn't leave my nation but spent time in several states and parts of states.

28) Did you drink a lot of alcohol in 2007?
No.

29) Did you do a lot of drugs in 2007?
Only legal ones. Since I'm prescribed 12 a day, plus any over the counter pain killers and the like along the way, I'd say I took a lot.

30) How many people did you sleep with in 2007?
None.

31) Did you do anything you are ashamed of this year?
No.

32 anyone?
No.

33) What was the worst lie someone told you in 2007?
I don't know.

Not really that I recall. I'll issue a blanket apology in case I did, though.

35) Did somebody treat you badly in 2007?
Not really.

36) How much money did you spend in 2007?
I've no idea. More than I should have but less than I would have liked?

37) What was your proudest moment of 2007?
Passing my doctoral comprehensive exams.

38) What was your most embarrassing moment of 2007?
I don't remember anything especially embarrassing.

39) If you could go back in time to any moment of 2007 and change something, what would it be?
Can it be something really major like keep my cousin's baby from dying?

40) What are your plans for 2008?
Teaching my own class for the first time, beginning in two weeks, is pretty much as far as I can see.

Looking back over all this, it sounds like my year consisted of passing my comps, getting my motorcycle, and my sister's wedding. Sounds about right I suppose.
