Random Morning Five

1.) I was just in bed for 13 hours straight. Dang. I went to bed last night at 10:00, immediately after Grey's Anatomy (Woah! I need next week's show NOW!). I didn't fall asleep until like 11:00, but just laying in bed was very nice. When my alarm went off at 8:00 to get my butt out of bed to go volunteer at the elementary school, I realized that I didn't feel well. My throat was really scratchy and painful and I had a headache. So I pulled out the little calendar thing they gave me to get the school's phone number to call and say I wasn't coming in (just the headache and I probably would have gone anyway but the throat worried me that I might have something contagious). According to the calendar, today is a Teacher Workday and the kids don't have school. Good thing I didn't feel well or I would have gone up there for no reason. Instead, I went back to bed with a clear conscience and finally got up at 11:11 and my throat no longer hurt and the headache was better, but still lingering.

2.) I just realized: my birthday is three weeks from yesterday. How'd that happen?

3.) With valentine's Day come and gone, I need a new LJ color scheme/background image. I'm debating between something St. Patty-ish and something general celebration. In the first half of March, ignoring the various members of my large extended family who have birthdays, anniversaries, etc. and just going immediate circle:
  • March 3: jdbracknell's Birthday
  • March 4: wildmagelet's Birthday
  • March 4: My Parent's Wedding Anniversary
  • March 8: My Birthday
  • March 9: My friend Bill's Birthday
That's a lot of stuff to celebrate. Anybody got any specific suggestions for the layout?

4.) I was in the middle of typing this and my computer suddenly flashed a blue screen with white text that I didn't have time to read. All I caught was the word "problem" then my computer turned itself off and back on. Everything seems to be fine now, but I'm a bit concerned.

5.) I had a bit of a mental breakthrough yesterday and I think I get the Populists and the Progressives! I'm very excited about this. Very. Much more so than most sane humans would consider reasonable. Good thing I never made any particular claims to sanity.

Harry Potter Friday Five (technically ganked from various people on the flist but really from hp_fridayfive)

1. If you could pick one director (living or dead) to direct a Potter film, who would it be and which film would they make?
I really don't know. I like what Cuaron did with PoA and wouldn't mind seeing him do another one, provided he promises not to cut something as important as the MWPP exposition. Other than that… how about Steven Spielberg for Deathly Hallows? He can do big blockbuster and special effects… he can do major emotion (think Schindler's List)… I guess I could see it. Of course, that's a decision made with no knowledge of the actual content of the book/movie.

2. How old were you when you first got into Harry Potter?
19 exactly. I got the first book as a birthday present after having spent a few months saying I really should try them sometime to see if they were worth all the hype that surrounded the release of the fourth book. I think my friend really just wanted me to shut up and stop saying that. If she did just want me to shut up about Harry Potter, I think she must have been rather disappointed by the results.

3. Choose another fandom and sort the main characters into Hogwarts houses.
Somebody over at the Friday Five community did John (G), Paul (S), George (R), and Ringo (H). For some reason I'm very amused by this. Very.
I suppose I'll do Star Wars because, well, that's what y'all expect, ain't it? I debated doing some of the non-specified characters from HP, just to be contrary but decided not to do so, largely because the flist is fairly likely to randomly debate on those anyway. I debated doing Highlander (TV series not movies), but I'm not sure how many of y'all know the characters from Highlander and as fun as it would be as a thought exercise, it's not as much fun if no one can/will debate any of it with me. For the same reason, I'm only doing main Star Wars original trilogy characters, though I am letting what I know from the comics, novels, and prequel trilogy influence my answers.

Luke: Gryffindor.
Leia: Gryffindor or Ravenclaw. I suppose Gryffindor since I probably shouldn't break up this Trio.
Han: Gryffindor.
Chewie: Hufflepuff (I know breaking up Han and Chewie is a criminal offense, but that's part of why Chewie is such a 'puff. His character is defined entirely by his loyalty to Han).
R2-D2: Ravcenclaw.
C-3P0: Tough one. I don't want to break up Artoo and Threepio, but Threepio isn't much of a Ravenclaw and Artoo totally is. Perhaps they should both be Hufflepuff because of their loyalty to each other?
Obi-Wan Kenobi: Ravneclaw or Hufflepuff.
Yoda: Ravenclaw.
Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader: Tough one, actually. I suppose the gut instinct is Slytherin because all bad guys must be Slytherin, right? Too facile. I'd say Hufflepuff. The defining moments of his life, his fall and his redemption, were both motivated, for good or ill, by love and devotion to someone else.
Senator/Chancellor/Emperor Palpatine: He really is Slytherin.

4. What's your favorite Gryffindor moment in the series?
Neville standing up to the Trio in Stone. And his little shocked face in the movie when Dumbledore gives him the points is priceless.

5. Do you foresee Harry reuniting with Sirius, his parents, and Dumbledore in Book 7 in some way?
Oh, probably. Definitely depending on how broad/vague is the working definition of "in some way."

If you wanted to combine St Patrick's Day with a general birthday thing, you could go with some kind of drinking montage. Or is it just me who intends to spend my birthday in a drunken heap under the table..? ;)

Since my comps start 11 days after my Bday, I seriously doubt I'll have the time for drinking. You'll have to do it for me.

I don't understand the whole green beer on St. Patrick's Day. I really don't. 'Course, I don't like beer at all, but I really don't think making it green helps any.

How do you forget that your birthday is coming up?

I'm mad that I missed Grey's Anatomy AND I can't even watch the re-airing that is on Friday nights because I'll be on the road!!
Spoil it or something for me?

I could give you one sentence that would be the biggest spoiler in the world and drive you batty for the next week until we get the next episode. Are you sure you want the one sentence?

Just in case anyone else meandering by doesn't want to know, highlight to read:

The one sentence: At the end of the episode, Meredith is dead.

Details: Izzie worked on the guy under the car. With directions from the Chief (reading from a textbook) and Mark, she drilled into his head while he was still under the car. They got him back to the hospital, she was hyped up, and the Chief took her off probation and let her in on the guy's operation.

Alex was placed in charge of getting families and patients matched on the patients that had no ID. He spent most of the episode walking around the hospital with a camera. He took photos of every patient and every dead body and then posted them on boards for the waiting family members to examine and try to ID. He's really worried about that one pregnant chick (still no ID on her) and there was a bit of movement on the Addison/Alex front but not much.

Christina spent the entire episode doing minor stuff at the hospital and asking everyone if Meredith was back yet because she wants to tell Meredith about the engagement. Burke doesn't understand how tight Christina and Meredith really are and is upset about the way Christina is acting.

George was trying to track down the son of a lady Bailey was operating on. The lady wouldn't go into surgery until she knew her son was fine, George said he was, Bailey privately called him on the lie and told him to find the kid. He finally did. Callie was operating on him.

Derek was out in the field and found the little girl that had been with Meredith. The girl, still not talking, pointed him to the water and he jumped in to get Meredith. By the time he got her up, she was completely blue with hypothermia. He did CPR on her all the way to the hospital. At the hospital, Bailey, the Chief, and Addison took over on Meredith, the chief ordered Derek out of the room. Derek went into the hall, Burke came by and asked what Derek needed from him as friends. Derek said I need you in that room so Burke joined the effort to try to save Meredith. At the end of the episode, Derek was slumped on the floor crying, Mark sat next to him and just put a hand on Derek's arm for comfort but they didn't say anything to each other. The other four interns were just outside that area, watching Mark and Derek. Izzie had a blow up about she believes lots of things including Meredith will be OK, they'll all be OK, and George made a huge mistake in marrying Callie. George hasn't reacted to that one yet.

Meredith "woke up" on a hospital bed in an operating room. The bomb guy and Denny were there and told her she's dead. Basically.

I can't wait to see those episodes of Grey's. Unfortunately we've only just started the season in NZ, so I've been relying on SpoilerFix and TVSquad.

I haven't actually thought much about my birthday. It seems like half the people I know have birthdays in February and March, too! I may just have to tag my celebrations onto someone else's to save the bother of hauling everybody out somewhere yet again. :)

Overall I'm liking this season more than the second one. The second one had a few highlights, but really just dragged. This one has been moving much better.

March is such a crazy month for my family! When I was born, I think there were 5 days in all of March I could hit that didn't already have somebody's birthday, anniversary, etc. and I hit one of them. And as of right now, I've still managed to keep it all to my self.

I couldn't help it!!

I had to go to a screening for my class and the film was on a frickin reel! It was the ONLY time we were able to watch it.

I checked the TV guide and it's not even re-airing tonight. The 2 hour bomb episode with Kyle Chandler is playing. I have that on DVD so I'm good with that.

That episode sounds super exciting though. I'm glad I know you so you could tell me. I wish I could have seen the whole episode though...instead of the very end on abc.com

How much of the end did you catch? There is good quality video of the last 7 1/2 minutes on you tube.

TV Links

I don't watch Grey's Anatomy so I don't know how far along the season is (or even what season is airing!), but this site is usually updated within a day of a show airing.

<a href="http://www.peekvid.com/>Peek Vid</a> is another one worth checking out, and is sometimes updated within the hour.

Is this how one survives without a television?

It looks like the TV Links one has had a lot of GA episodes pulled for copyright violations but dang there's a lot of good shows listed on there. I'll have to check them out sometime. Thanks for the links.

This is how one survives without a television when unemployed (and being linked by a fab person like kileaiya. Otherwise, it's a very active account with Amazon and patience...

Shows are getting pulled all the time, but they get put back up again, it's just a case going back to check, especially with Peek Vid.

Thanks for that. I don't have time to watch it now...Haha.

There's another site called tvlinks.co.uk that has a bunch of shows posted on it as well.

It was a horrible place to end!

Seen any good St. Patty's backgrounds/large images?
