Better Than It Sounds Meme

Tags: , , , , ,
I'll reply to all the comments people have left over the past ten or so days and hopefully have time to scroll through the flist from when I was gone later today. In the meantime, have a meme ganked from failte_aoife:
Go to Better Than It Sounds at TV Tropes and find some shows/books/whatever that you like. List 20, let people guess.

I've got a mix of books, comic books, TV shows, movies, bands, and plays, I think. I'll strike through the ones people have figured out but hide the answers behind spoiler tags in case others still want to see what they can get.

  1. Dr. Frank 'N Furter, Doc Brown, and a bunch of other blackmail victims run around a big house looking for a murderer and debating simple mathematics. [Answer]Clue

  2. Musical, theater and film: An obnoxious lawyer, an emo farmer, a horny doctor and a bunch of middle-aged white men bitch about the heat and call each other names while trying to start a revolution. There are more sex jokes than you might expect. A lot more. [Answer]1776

  3. A college professor joins forces with a bartender to fight an entire army over a box that will kill you if you try to open it. [Answer]Raiders of the Lost Ark (Indiana Jones)

  4. Musical, best known for film version: A famous actor must reinvent himself after the surprising discovery that he can't actually act. His girlfriend has a co-worker try to take credit for her work.[Answer]Singin' in the Rain

  5. A squadron of insane soldiers try to not die in the war. Paradoxical bureaucracy gets in the way of that. [Answer]Catch-22

  6. 1960s band: It's a Fake Band formed for a TV show that consists of a TV actor whose career involved the circus, a British guy who gave up horse racing for the musical stage, a folk singer from the East coast, and a Texas hillbilly who wears a thick green piece of winter clothing. [Answer]The Monkees

  7. Book series: Guy who looks like Clint Eastwood hikes to the center of the universe because he feels like it.

  8. A man gets his sofa unstuck from the stairwell, with help from an old college professor. [Answer]Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency

  9. Classic book or play for alternate version: A widower chases after a serial killer whose killing spree is the widower's own fault. For an alternate version: Sherlock Holmes and Sherlock Holmes take turns being complete assholes to one another. [Answer]Frankenstein

  10. Classic Play: Young man suffers from mental illness, hallucinates, desecrates a grave, then murders his family. [Answer]Hamlet

  11. A good-hearted but spineless Upper Class Twit is constantly manipulated by his more ruthless associates, family, and manservant. Wackiness ensues.[Answer]Jeeves and Wooster

  12. Comic books: Emo Kid breaks out of prison, gets his jewelry off some weirdos, gets into trouble thanks to a White-Haired Pretty Boy and tries to get his sister to accept him. Or: A depressed workaholic stages an elaborate suicide. His family doesn't really care. [Answer]Sandman

  13. 1970s and 1980s TV Show: A bunch of Americans living abroad in the 1950s talk and act like it's the 1970s, and crack a lot of jokes about death. [Answer]M.A.S.H.

  14. A variety show—starring assorted singing and dancing animals, not to mention talking food—where nearly all of the acts end in total disaster. Comes complete with its own MST3K riffers. [Answer]The Muppet Show

  15. 1960s Band: Four guys from California named after a beer commercial write songs about the Deep South. Their popular songs are often misunderstood or misheard. [Answer]Creedence Clearwater Revival

  16. Two slackers discover that the dead have risen and decide to go to the pub. [Answer]Shaun of the Dead

  17. Book series: An Officer and a Gentleman throws away his Naval career for his new pet. [Answer]Temeraire series a.k.a. the His Majesty's Dragon series

  18. Comic books: A Massive Multiplayer Crossover featuring characters from Fairy Tales and folklore, who are forced out of their homelands by a ruthless dictator and take refuge in New York City.

  19. An old man spends several lifetimes convincing hot young things to join him inside a box. He is routinely harassed by tin men, Nazi saltshakers and his old college buddies.[Answer]Doctor Who

  20. A guy with an ABD in astrophysics joins forces with a flamboyantly gay singer to write mini-rock operas about riding a bicycle. Over 30 years later he gets that PhD.[Answer]Queen

Ah...some of those where things I also considered for my meme so I know what they are :P Saying them would now be cheating (10,17 & 19) but 20 sounds a lot like Queen.

I'm not surprised we considered some of the same ones. There were plenty on yours I liked and could have gotten but I didn't see it until after people had already done them all.

Right you are with Queen.

I feel like I should know more...is 18 The Tenth Kingdom? (I haven't actually watched it just heard a lot about it)
Rachael
bratty_jedi at 3:22 pm on 14 June 2013 (UTC) (Link)
Not Tenth Kingdom, though it is a somewhat similar idea. I've edited to add if things are books, TV shows, or what, which might help a bit.

3 Indiana Jones (first movie)

16 Shawn of the Dead

19 Doctor Who

bratty_jedi at 2:27 pm on 10 June 2013 (UTC) (Link)

A wild guess on nr. 14: The Muppets?
Rachael
bratty_jedi at 4:30 pm on 10 June 2013 (UTC) (Link)
Yep!

Yay! And nr. 2 makes me think about M.A.S.H., but I'm not totally sure.
Rachael
bratty_jedi at 6:03 pm on 10 June 2013 (UTC) (Link)
#2 is not M.A.S.H.

5 Catch 22
8 Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency or possibly the sequel
10 could be Donnie Darko?
11 Jeeves and Wooster
Rachael
bratty_jedi at 7:17 pm on 10 June 2013 (UTC) (Link)
Yes to Catch-22, Dirk Gently, and Jeeves and Wooster. Nope on Donnie Darko, though I could see that.

It's a very long time since I've seen it! I must watch it again at some point.

Ah, context. Can try another couple;
6 is the Monkees
Is 13 MASH?

7 is nagging at me!
Rachael
bratty_jedi at 8:10 pm on 14 June 2013 (UTC) (Link)
Yep on both The Monkees and M.A.S.H.

7 is a fantasy series by a well-known author who is not generally known for fantasy, if that helps more.

9 is Frankenstein! 10 is Hamlet? Is 12 the Sandman?
Rachael
bratty_jedi at 11:15 am on 15 June 2013 (UTC) (Link)
Correct on all three!
Unsentimental Fool
unsentimentalf at 12:24 pm on 23 June 2013 (UTC) (Link)
I can't believe I didn't get any of those three!
Rachael
bratty_jedi at 12:48 pm on 23 June 2013 (UTC) (Link)
There are definitely ones that just don't click for me and then when I find out what they are it seems so obvious.
Unsentimental Fool
unsentimentalf at 12:23 pm on 23 June 2013 (UTC) (Link)
I took yet another look!

17's the Temeraire series.

15's Creedence Clearwater Revival (but I have to admit to doing a little bit of digging for that one).
Rachael
bratty_jedi at 12:47 pm on 23 June 2013 (UTC) (Link)
Correct on both.

I have to admit to doing a little bit of digging for that one
I knew that one would be tough but I love CCR and the while "California boys sing bayou music" thing about them has always amused me so I had to throw it in.

Is number 2 Singin' in the Rain?
Rachael
bratty_jedi at 6:19 pm on 29 June 2013 (UTC) (Link)
Singin' in the Rain is not #2 but it is the second one left unguessed so I'll assume that's what you mean and say "Yes, it is!" :)

ellex42 at 9:44 pm on 29 June 2013 (UTC) (Link)
Oops! Number 4, then.

Number 2 is 1776! I think.
