Reason 5 billion and some odd to Love Neil Gaiman

Tags: , ,
He was asked on tumblr: How does it feel as a writer when people are so desperate to see more of a character you created, they will spend inordinate amounts of their time finding ways to subvert, change or modify the fates you chose for them?

His answer: Surely that’s the joy of fan-fiction? Subverting, changing and modifying characters fates in ways that make you happy.

How does it feel as a writer when people do this? It feels great. I’m thrilled the characters I’ve created are real enough that people want to do this sort of thing to and with them. (Just do not ever expect me to read it.)

If I didn't already love him, that would be a very good reason to start. :)

That's a great response! However, since Neil Gaiman loves writing Sherlock Holmes fanfic (or is that pastiche once he publishes it?) himself, it would have been weird had his answer been much different...

I think I am still to tired because I just searched for the reblog-button for this post XD

I admit I haven't even read anything by Neil Gaiman (except Good Omens) but he says many things that make me admire him very much.

Sherlock Holmes fanfic, Lovecraft fanfic (sometime at the same time!), pretty sure he's said his first Doctor Who episode was basically fanfic he was invited to write, etc. He's great and has said good things about fanfic before that I've seen, but I particularly liked the phrasing here.
