Month Meme - Day 25

Ganked this from mrstater. Would love to see more people do it, if you've got any time at all!

Day 25: Your religious beliefs
In a word: atheist. In three words: agnostic leaning atheist.

There is absolutely no evidence that there is a god of any shape, form, or fashion. There is as much evidence that the god of the Bible exists as there is that Zeus exists: namely, a few people have told some stories about him over the years. I don't believe in either of them or any of the stories told about them or any other gods. If other people want to believe these stories, I don't care. I really don't and I don't think I'm better or smarter than people who do believe in a particular set of stories about a particular deity. Just don't try to use your beliefs in said stories to dictate what I should do with my life, including whom I should marry, whom I should have sex with and when, and what I should do if I get pregnant as a result of said sex. I care very much about that and do think I'm better than people who would use their beliefs to dictate my life.

That said, I accept that it is possible that there is something beyond this universe and this life that is beyond human knowledge and comprehension. I accept that it is possible that there is something that survives death, some kind of spirit or soul, and that there is some agency or will that we might as well call a deity that set all this into motion. I actually kind of like this idea as I find it hard to believe that things like the works of Van Gogh, Frank Lloyd Wright, Shakespeare, etc. were created due to random chemical firings in synapses and prefer the idea of an immortal soul or spirit. I don't expect this to be the case, no matter how much I might like it, it isn't logical and there's no proof for it, but I accept that it could be so. If there is such an entity and such life after death, I firmly believe it will bear no resemblance to any of the wild speculation man has made up about Gods over the eons and that we can't know anything about it in this realm so it has no impact on my life and isn't worth worrying about.

If I'm wrong about all this, if, just to use the example most prominent in the culture in which I exist, the Christian concept of God is true, I will, I suppose, burn in Hell for all eternity for failing to believe in Him and His Son. I'm OK with that. Any god who is so self-centered and unfair as to punish someone who honestly lived a good life and did the best he or she could for his or her fellow creatures, etc. just because he or she used logic rather than faith or was born into the wrong family and had faith in the Hindu, Buddhist, Muslim, Jewish, etc. religion rather than the Christian one is such a piece of shit that I'd rather burn in Hell for all eternity than have anything to do with Him. Besides which, I'm currently addicted to BBC Radio Sitcoms and Dramas and Old Harry's Game has taught me that Satan is actually pretty cool, especially to academics, so I'm not too worried.
