Two links: one demoralizing and one wicked cool

Apparently President Obama is giving a brief speech encouraging kids to stay in school that will be broadcast to classrooms on Tuesday. Some people are not happy about this.
“The thing that concerned me most about it was it seemed like a direct channel from the president of the United States into the classroom, to my child,” said Brett Curtiss, an engineer from Pearland, Tex., who said he would keep his three children home. “I don’t want our schools turned over to some socialist movement."

There's worse stuff than that in the article, but I had to post that bit because I graduated from Pearland High School. I weep.

In other news, you can see high res pictures of Neil Gaiman's library here. OMG! I want to move into his basement so badly now. Or just steal all the books, but then I wouldn't have any place to put them all, let alone someplace as super cool as his basement library, so we'd better just stick to me moving into his basement.

Did you happen to note what books are on the shelf in the bottom left pic?

I guess he should have at least one copy of everything he's written. There's another photo in there somwhere where there is one shelf that has a few dozen copies of Coraline in multiple languages. That one seems a bit overkill.

It looks like he's got every edition of everything he's ever published. I can't decide if that's normal, or a wee bit narcissistic...

I'm going to assume he gets one free from the publisher and just keeps them all.

You know, as if I didn't have enough book envy he mentioned on his blog today that there is also an upstairs library with all the good reference books. I'm starting to think he has more books than my college's library. I'm sure he has more that I'd want to read than does my college...

I posted a reply to this but it seems to have vanished so I'm trying again...

I'm going to assume he gets one copy free from every publisher and just keeps them all. Seems logical anyway.

EDIT: And now the first comment is back. I think there is something wrong with the library computer that I'm using.

I'm going for the latter. Though I'm also giving him the benefit of the doubt as he's avoided any arrows pointing directly to them, lol, and I don't want to completely scuper my chances of getting an invite round to see that wonderful library! (Though my Ikea bookshelves are only slightly smaller, obviously.;))

But you and I think Neil's got a bit of a crush on himself anyway. ;)

Mr. Tater and I are planning to find his house when we're up in MN for Christmas.

I know, but let's hope it's like the girlfriend and just a passing phase he's going through!

Don't break into the library. It'll ruin the whole spirit of Christmas thing if you spend it locked up.

surely Neil wouldn't mind people breaking in to see his books...

I totally want to live in that basement. Or at least be allowed to visit and ogle the books.
