Fleur, or at least the actress who played her in GoF, is officially not going to be in the HBP film. I'm not surprised though I am disappointed.

The Star Wars Clone Wars animated TV show is premiering in the states this fall. That's been known for a while. Rumored for a while and officially announced yesterday, this summer a Clone Wars animated film will be released to theaters. Star Wars will be back on the big screen again which is always exciting! Too bad I'm not a big fan of the animation from what we've seen so far, I never got into the Clone Was novels and comics the way I am with the post Original Trilogy stuff, and I'm part of the Star Wars expanded universe fan base that is worried George Lucas is going to completely ignore the storylines already established in the novels and comics thus taking a fictional universe that has surprisingly few "historical" contradictions and blowing it all to shreds.

Today I have to finish writing and then deliver a lecture. Tomorrow I hope to make a decision on the fanfic stuff that was the subject of my last post and get started on something.

The William and Mary president was informed that his contract will not be renewed this summer and had therefore resigned effective today. This sucks. He's been the president basically since I got here and has done a lot of things that I really admire but caused other people to basically go after him on a witch-hunt. Some of his most controversial decisions:
  • One of the oldest buildings on campus is the Wren Chapel. It used to be a regular chapel but has been decommissioned (is that the right word?) and is now used for all kinds of lectures, group meetings, etc. There is a large cross on display in this building. Some of the Jewish, Hindu, Islamic, and atheist student organizations on campus went to President Nichols and said they were uncomfortable attending academic lectures with a large cross on prominent display. Since the building is no longer an active chapel, President Nichols decided to remove the cross from permanent display. It is still in the Wren building and if anyone wants to have the cross brought out for their meeting, lecture, whatever, or wants to have the cross brought out when the building is not in active use for individual prayer or whatever, all they have to do is ask and it is brought out.
  • Actively trying to bring in more lower income students by increasing financial aid and actively trying to bring in students and hire faculty with a more diverse background than the previously almost entirely white and upper middle class or higher group that was here.
  • Refusing to ban a student organization from organizing an "obscene" display of art created for and by workers in the sex industry.
He sent an email out to all the students today explaining his position yet again on all these issues and basically saying how disappointed he is in this turn of events. My favorite is this part of the email:
I add only that, on Sunday, the Board of Visitors offered both my wife and me substantial economic incentives if we would agree “not to characterize [the non-renewal decision] as based on ideological grounds” or make any other statement about my departure without their approval. Some members may have intended this as a gesture of generosity to ease my transition. But the stipulation of censorship made it seem like something else entirely. We, of course, rejected the offer. It would have required that I make statements I believe to be untrue and that I believe most would find non-credible. I’ve said before that the values of the College are not for sale. Neither are ours.Brilliant.

EDIT: If anyone is getting FF.Net updates on me, the Valentine's Story one that just came through is the Arthur/Molly fic I wrote after Valentine's Day and posted here last year. I just decided to wait until before V Day this year to post it over there.

Wow. That's all I can say. His statement is, as you said, brilliant. I can't believe all the hullaballoo over some of his decisions. If you can't have an open intellectual and ideological environment in an academic setting, then where the hell can you have it? Grrr.

I know! The craziest thing to me is the latests major controversy, over the Sex Worker's Art Show, doesn't make any sense. It is a touring show. This is the third year in a row it has been at W&M and there was no controversy before. It was at Duke the day before it was at W&M and at another Virginia college (George Mason) the day after it was at W&M and there was no controversy there. Yet somehow it being at W&M this year was enough to get members of the Virginia House of Delegates calling for our President's removal? There's footage at youtube of some of the speeches made by Delegates in assembly about it and it is completely ridiculous.

This will sound like an awfully lightweight subject to be addressing here, but Fleur's absence could possibly indicate that there will be marginally more attention paid to Remus/Tonks as the "adult" background romance for the remainder of the movie series, since we know that both Thewlis and Tena are returning. I mean, if they can't be used to lend poignancy to the proceedings because of their marital struggles, their deaths at the end won't contain any resonance whatsoever, so the movie makers may as well go for it.

You seem to be assuming that there has to be an adult background romance and I'm not sure why. As the books get longer, the movies have to have a tighter focus. Thematic issues and subplots have and will be dropped. From the vantage point of focusing in on the main plot and dropping everything else by the wayside, there is no need for any adult relationship and certainly not specifically for Remus and Tonks. Knowing the actors are returning is a more convincing rationale for assuming there will be some R/T, but I'm still skeptical. They could just be there for the battle with no other scenes and no explicit mention of their relationship.

Well, it would be nice for WB to throw adult fans a bone, but I agree, who knows what they're thinking at this point?

Don't forget also that we have seen Hagrid/Olympe already, however poorly that was portrayed, so they're not eliminating the suggestion of relationships beyond the kids entirely.

In addition, considering that Harry becomes involved in the results of their marriage, as Teddy's godfather who ends up partly raising him, the greatest "tight-focus" character of the story is not completely divorced himself from this particular subplot.

And there is always the possibility that DH will be split in two, leaving more subplots open to inclusion. Wouldn't it be ironic if that led to a greater opportunity for more R/T? (And mind you, I'm talking about maybe ten minutes within the space of three 2 1/2 hr movies here.)

But I certainly agree that we'll have to wait and see what we get. I haven't forgotten how incidental both Remus and Tonks were to OotP, despite there being no need for it whatsoever in the case of the former.
