Lecturing while a zombie

Tags: ,
For three or four days now I've been having trouble sleeping. It's largely just been laying in bed, tossing-and-turning, for an hour or so before I can finally drop off to sleep. Last night hit full blown insomnia. I was tired from not enough sleep before so I tried going to bed early at around 10:00. At 11:30 or so, I was still awake so I got up, played around for a while, and tried going to bed again at around 2:00. Repeat with getting up at 3:30 or 4:00 and playing until 6:00 or so when I was finally able to fall asleep. I got about 3 hours of sleep before getting up at 9:30. I am SO exhausted and have been like the living dead all day today.

To make thing even better, I had my First Real Lecture today. Class went OK, I think. Keep in mind that this is the first time I've had a class of my own so this is as much a learning experience for me as anything else. I decided about 10 minutes into my lecture that I had about the right amount of material for a typical 50 minute Monday/Wednesday/Friday class. This was great except for the minor detail that my class is a typical hour and twenty minute Tuesday/Thursday class which left me about thirty minutes shy. It wasn't actually quite that bad, but I did slow down considerably, rambled a bit a few times, and let class out about 10 to 15 minutes early. For a first time, though, I really can't complain. Here's hoping it just gets better.

Oh, you poor thing, I'm sorry you've not been sleeping well. Here's hoping tonight you konk out and sleep through the night!

Sounds like you're settling right into teaching! You're going to do great.

Can I pester you with a FlexiSquares question? setting the margins for ul.navheader li does not carry over within the body of a post. Where do I change that in my CSS? (To see what I mean, click in any of my posts.)

I got a good amount of sleep last night. I gave int, took a sleeping pill, and went to bed early. I only woke up once during the night and tat wasn't for very long and then i didn't wake up again until 10 this morning.

Thanks. I'm learning so hopefully it'll just get better.

On the CSS, I'm not 100% certain what you're talking about. Elaborate please? I did notice glancing through your CSS that you've got ul.navheader li a in there twice which might cause a few problems.

I'm glad you got some sleep last night!

Took out one of the .ul.navheader li a things and it didn't help... On my main page the navlinks are all on one line, but if you click on any of the entries, it's got "Remembrall" down below.

It's all on one line for me on all the page views in Firefox so I checked it in IE6 and now I see what you mean. It has to have something to do with li.view. That is the only element that is in the header on all the pages that are displaying correctly and not in the header of all the pages that are displaying incorrectly. Since I'm not seeing a problem in FireFox, I can't play with the CSS on the fly and give you a 100% guaranteed fix but I think I know what to do. Add this to your CSS:
ul.navheader li.view a{
  margin: 0px 9px 0px 9px;
  }

ul.navheader li.view {
  margin: 0px 0px 0px 0px;
  }

If I'm correct, that has a 50% chance of making every page display correctly and a 50% chance of making every page display incorrectly. In either case, they'll at least be uniform so if it is incorrect you'll just have to reduce the two 9px in both ul.navheader li.view a and ul.navheader li a until it all fits.

Now I have no idea what is going on with my css/html for why there is that box above the lines of code when the lines of code should be inside the box. Weird.

That did it, thanks! Weird thing is, I was using Firefox.

Of course now they're not spaced evenly apart but whatever.

That is weird about FireFox. Huh.

I think you got rid of both ul.navheader li a. If you put one of those back in with margins of 0px Xpx 0px Xpx and change the X to match the px on ul.navheader li.view a, you should be able to get them all evenly spaced.

Yikes! I hope you manage to get a good night's sleep. I'm sure your lecture was awesome even if you were a zombie. Besides, if you can get through a lecture on no sleep you'll be fine for the rest of the semester.

I suppose that is true!

I did get a decent night sleep so hopefully I'll do that again tonight and be much more awake for my lecture tomorrow.

Have also not been sleeping, and it sucks. I sometimes find lavender oil helps, depending on the cause (ie, if it's a mind-whirring type scenario, you just lie there with something pretty to smell).

I think that sounds like a promising start, lecture-wise. It must be hard to judge exactly how much to prepare, and I'm sure after a couple of weeks you'll be doing it as if you've always done it :D.

I gave in and took a sleeping pill. At this point, I wanted sleep, didn't much care how it came, and I take enough pills that I'm pretty blase about adding a few more.

I've never given a history lecture of longer than about 20 minutes so I really had no clue how much I'd need. I've led classes for longer than that, but those weren't straight lectures. Here's hoping it doesn't take me too long to figure this out.
