LJ wants to give you money for charity

Tags:
I realize this is my second post in almost as many days about LJ business, but I really want to make sure everyone hears about this.

As I'm sure you all know, most major companies donate to charities for public relation reasons. The owners of LJ, Six Apart, are no different in that but they want to get their community of users involved in their donating. So right now you can ask LJ for a $30 certificate for you to donate to DonorsChoose. DonorsChoose is an organization to help schools. The way it works, essentially, is a teacher/school/whatever submits a request that says "We want to do this project for these reasons and need money for x, y, and z." As a donor, you pick a specific project that you would like to support, your money goes to that project, and at the end you get a thank you package from the kids who benefited.

If you are interested in making a donation to help out school kids without even needing to spend your own money, all you have to do is email LJ asking for your $30 certificate and pick a project at DonorsChoose that you want to support. For all the details, see this LJ Biz post and DonorsChoose.Org.

It's a great idea - just a shame it's not available for international users.

Do you have to be in America to participate? I think the schools at the charity are all American and it would certainly be better if there were other options, but I think international users can still participate though I could be wrong. I completely understand wanting to help out a charity closer to home, but since doing this doesn't cost the user anything but is instead just spending LJ's money, I don't think it is that big of a deal.
