I quit

I am giving up on fandom.

Correction: I'm sticking to fandom and giving up on canon of any type.

In Star Wars: I love Luke/Mara and shipped them from the start and saw all the build-up clues. So they killed Mara after basically destroying her character over the course of multiple books.

In Harry Potter: I love Remus/Tonks and ditto and ditto (well, most of the clues anyway). So JKR kills Remus and Tonks in a fairly capricious and off-camera manner.

In Highlander: I love Methos. Forget shipping him with anybody, he rocks all by himself. So they maybe possibly killed him. When last seen, he was riding off to be the decoy, offering himself as a meal to a bunch of cannibals so the Highlander could be The One. The obvious intention of the film makers is that he died, but I'm voting his really fast horse let him get away. I'm still pissy, though.

What is it with this year? I've always been secure in my little fandom obsessions. All my ships come true, nothing goes seriously wrong for my favorite characters, etc. Now this year, everyone is dying! I've had enough. NO MORE KILLING MY FAVORITE CHARACTERS! Period. It isn't allowed. I'm the boss and I said so.

On a brighter note, Peter Wingfield, the guy who plays Methos, is going to be in an episode in the new season of 24. I've never watched 24, but I'm all for anything that gets Peter more exposure to audiences and casting directors. Hopefully they don't kill his character there.

Wait...when did Mara die? Am I that out of touch? Crap, she was my favorite.

Oops. I didn't realize there were any Star Wars EU fans on the flist who didn't know about it already or I would have lj-cut it. I wonder if I should now.

They killed her in Sacrifice which was published at the end of May. Sacrifice was the fifth book of their current nine-book story arc. There has been one book released so far that takes place after Sacrifice.

What all books/comics have you read?

Nah, it's cool - at least in my case. I think I stopped reading after Luke and Mara hooked up when they were stranded on that planet/in the cave - I followed what was going on, though I stopped reading the books. IMO, they went downhill after the Timothy Zahn trilogy of the '90's - but that's just me. I've heard probably a bit past there, know about Callista and all her lame-ness, but my favorite Star Wars book is actually Truce at Bakura.

And I really, really dislike Callista.

"Read" not "Heard". It's late and I'm apparently incoherent.

I agree with you that Zahn's stuff is the best. The New Jedi Order is when they started to destroy Mara's character. Well, it wasn't so much that they destroyed her character as they made her into someone that destroyed Luke's character whenever he was around her which actually kind of destroyed both their characters. If they do something good with Luke, I'll say killing Mara was for the best. Jury is still out on that as far as I'm concerned.

Did you ever read Survivor's Quest? It's written by Zahn and is Luke and Mara on a mission shortly after their marriage. It is pretty good and ties in with another book of his, Outbound Flight, which tells Thrawn's back story that was so often danced around in that original trilogy.

Callista is just creepy. Dead girl's spirit taking over some other girl's body? Even with the body donor being willing, that is just not good.
What's Taters, Precious?

I just saw Becoming Jane and am now trying to refrain from writing fanfic about Jane Austen, lol.

Since my new opinion is fandom rocks over canon, I'd lean towards go for it, but I'm a bit hesitant on real person fic.

On another note: Happy Birthday (in about six minutes for your timezone)!

That is precisely why I'm not wanting to give in to the urge to write it, lol. I was just ragging on real person fic the other day...

And thank yoU!

See, part of my hesitation, aside from the obvious THEY ARE REAL PEOPLE!!, comes from the fact that I don't think I've ever seen any real person fic other than RPS (Real Person Slash in case you missed that lesson of Internet Acronyms 101) and I can't see you writing slash.

I'm not even sure I got the point of R/T. I mean, you know I'm a huge shipper, and the foreshadowing in OoTP was cute, as was the revelation that they were dating in HBP. Both rocked as minor characters, and Remus's part in PoA was necessary and served a purpose.

But in TDH, she seemed to be wrestling with how much to include their backstory. So many things are ever explained, beyond how they died. She opened plotlines that were never resolved.

Actually, it makes me sort of wish she'd just left them low key.

I think this just goes back to my argument of "So much buildup of subplots in GoF, OotP, and HBP that went NOWHERE in DH."

I think you should brace yourself; I'm a big fan of 24 and it's sort of a rule that eventually everyone except Kiefer Sutherland dies. Perhaps if you prepare for the worst, it won't actually happen this once? ;)

If he's only supposed to be in one episode, can't he just ride off into the sunset as it were and disappear rather than actually die?

*sigh* OK, maybe not.
